I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I think it is a great bit of innovation, but I wonder just how useful it will really be.

A laptop like this (heavy heavy heavy) will never really be aimed at portability beyond the fact that it can be moved from one room to another with relative ease. What I mean by this is that its not one to take in a backpack when you go hiking for a spot of CS GO on the mountainside. You move it from one room of the house to the other if you want to be nearer the beer fridge, or from your bedroom to a LAN and back again. My main question is for these scenarios is it really that difficult to also bring along a dedicated keyboard?

Take laptop to LAN, take mouse, take keyboard. There you go, you have a desktop replacement. Although having the keyboard built in DOES reduce the amount you carry by 1 box, it doesn't make a great deal of difference to the overall portability of the set up. The question then is how good is the keyboard? If it is really fantastic, then sure, that 1 less box may be enough to 'justify' it (have to remember the laptop/keyboard combo also has some fantastic horsepower attached to it). If however that keyboard just isn't as nice to use, which I suspect may be the case due to the size alone, then I just don't see the point. I would rather get a cheaper laptop with the same insides but no mechanical keyboard, and bring a separate keyboard along instead.

Its a balancing act then, of how good the keyboard is versus how much it adds to the cost. I don't think the increased portability is that much of an added benefit given the nature of the rest of the set up.

Lovely, but I think the article nailed it.

QuoteFor $3300, we'd rather build a small mini-ITX system in a compact case, throw a GTX 980 and desktop Core i5 into it, and pocket the extra $2000 or so.
