The first thing to realise about USB-C is that it's not a new USB standard in the same way as USB 1.1, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 or the very latest USB 3.1 are. Those upgrades focus on defining what the connection can do in terms of speed and feature improvements, whereas USB-C is all about the physical connection, like with microUSB and miniUSB.
The crucial difference here, though, is that unlike micro and miniUSB, USB-C is aimed at being a replacement for both ends of the cable

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

Most new Android phones released this year now use a USB-C connector instead of the old micro-USB, I think the next generation of iPhones (7?) are rumoured to be using it too.

As Sulky's quote points out, it's just a different type of physical connector for USB cables.

As far as I can tell all it means in the real world is I can connect my USB C connectors in either way round, no more twisting them 180 degrees cause I'm trying to push them in back to front, which is a godsend and also I can now fast charge my phone in about twenty minutes.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Not only can you insert them either way up smilo, you can even change which end plugs in where!
