So. What is arguably being called the beginnings of the final game (debatable) is already under test. It will likely be in our hands towards the end of the month. This might be a good time to start organising some collective nights to try out the systems and to start working out the features. Between us we have the equipment, most definitely.

I have to admit now, I'm getting a bit threadbare in waiting for as long as it's taken now. But I'll save that for another thread. I just hope 3.0 feels like my expectations.

Sounds promising. Any indication of the recommended spec PC required to enjoy playing the game? Many people are holding off upgrades so they can at least get a decent SC capable rig. It would be ironic if we have a bunch of folks wanting to dive in and half of them can't run the thing.

I have to be honest. Anything at the moment is pure speculation. However, I've some experience with deployed software and what we have access to ATM is woefully unoptimised. Let me summarise.

Netcode is likely the most complete thing ATM. Needs to be to remove bottlenecking on their servers. Assets will not really change, given their announcement that the finished game is likely to be quite large in terms of filesize, I would expect image and sound files to be uncompressed to reduce local system load.

Physics and systems won't be anywhere near finished yet, and since they've only just started pushing diffs (rather than requiring entire downloads each time) tells me they're likely not compiling assets still yet. Which means it will still be won't be in a final exe/compiled dat state, so it won't be as easy for a machine to access at present.

Hopefully we will see a considerable improvement in terms of required specs.

I hope so. More than anything I'm just trying to justify the time and energy ive spent... Not to mention money. Had not to feel a bit anxious now

I know the feeling, I've written off any investment in SC now so anything that is forthcoming in the near future will be epic excitement. I find it difficult to believe the level of return will match my investment but I'm quite prepared to be surprised.

I'm not a member of the Evocati, but I know someone who is and they have said that 3.0 is everything we've been promised and more.  They've said its still a little rough around the edges, apparently, but it plays very smooth and shows that a lot of optimisation has already been done, although there's more to go.

Specs-wise, from what I can gather, current mid-spec PCs should run sc no problem, and more processing has been shed to the GPU, so a better graphics card will now start to make a difference to the experience.

Apparently there's a new party system, so once we have access, we should arrange a couple of evenings to explore the features and test things out as a group before moving on.

Persnally, I have zero doubt that CIG are going to deliver a game that at least equals my initial vision for the game.  It may take longer than I'd expected (even with my development experience) and certainly longer than I'd have hoped, but I don't mind the wait if we get anything remotely comparable to what I had envisioned (and everything is pointing to them exceeding that by quite some way!).

This is a given. There will be a massive shift in focus once 3.0 hits.

While I'm confident they will ship an enjoyable game, I have zero confidence in their timelines.
OFC, I'll eat the proverbial hat if they do!

Towards the end of this month maybe?

Obsydian

I reckon just before the Xmas break for a public release (i.e. Not PTU).

Any more news from the evocati friend? hows it all shaping up?? If you don't mind my asking, seems quite on the edge of release now if the AtV is anything to go by :D
