You great cooling and no noise, right?  Generally speaking a heat-pipe or a flower will deliver both of these things well.  What's the budget for it?  Good heat pipes might cost up to £50, a flower £25.

dont worry ive settled on a nice little heatsink.

supports up to xp3000+
made by akasa

and its got blue leds w00t.

decided against spending £40 on a heatpipe and get a cooler which by far exceeds what i need for just over £15

That'll be good then as it's meant to move air to cool things  :taz:  :narnar:

Thermalrights are good, getting cheaper and with a decent 80mm fan very quiet.
Can't beat the smell of burning copper in the morning.

Heat rises surely.

So has my case fan, bit of a waste on an enclosed black case though!
I can just see them flashing against the wall if I turn the lights off.

I just installed the coolermaster Aero 7+ with the full copper jobbie and hamster-wheel fan (everyone seems to know what I mean when I say that), the fan speed controller put me off at first but it is relatively noiseless on mid setting and I only need to crank it up to full to start folding.  :D

Knocked about 10c off the CPU idle temp at mid setting (and about 18c knocked off when running at full speed for folding).

CPU temp used to be up at 74c while folding, 11c away from meltdown!

74 degrees?  Liberator you have a problem.  Your cpu should never get that hot with that heatsink - whether folding, idling, playing CS or just watching your latest pron flick.

Take the Coolermaster off, clean the cpu & base, re-apply a *very small* amount of thermal goop to the cpu, spread the goop across the cpu with the edge of a credit card so that the goop *just* spreads far enough to cover the cpu, then re-seat the heatsink.  Use Arctic Silver 5 for the goop stage.  If you use too much goop it actually makes it less effective, the trick is to use as little as possible.  It is only meant to fill in the micoscopic pits in the surface of the cpu and the heatsink base, not be the filling in a sandwich!

The other possibility is that your case has some of the worst ventillation known to man.  Is the room it is in too hot?  Are there sufficient fans drawing air into the case?  Is there a balancing set of fans to draw the warm air out?

Also let us know which cpu (inc type if AMD eg Barton/Palamino/Thoroughbred A/B) and if you overclock or have upped vcore.

Post back here with results, cos what you have at the moment isn't working!  Hopefully you'll tell us that it now doesn't go over 50 degrees.

Agree with TL. Flat out gaming should kick things to somewhere around the 50 mark. 74 is way out man :)

Cheers TL,

I've put it down to the fact that the mobo is a lieing SOB.

The HS is just nicely warm while running at mid setting on fan and folding like a goodun', even though the mobo says its CPU is at 64c. Case extractor fan, just behind CPU, is blowing out relatively cool air. I think PSU may be ready for upgrade, it is blowing quite warm (doesn't give PSU temp readings, just fan speed).

Popped the CPU out for about the 4th time since I got it (just before Christmas) after it had been running at full pelt and immediately put a lip to the dye, just slightly warm. The surrounding mobo area was fine as well.

Wiped of the existing AS3 compound (I had only used the half grain of rice and creditcard, as per web site) from the CPU 'n' HS and reapplied the same to the dye (washed it off my lip as well  :D ).

To tell the truth I never actually looked at the temps while I had a 1700+ in there, I think I started watching because I put the new CPU in with the cooler off the 1700+ (checked the web site for specs and it was within range). Then upgraded to Aero 7+ due to the readings.

Facts,
-Chieftec Scorpio tower + one extractor fan just behind CPU. Blocked off the fan bay below to allow air to only be taken through front, thus feeding the entire case. Airflow is fine.
-Asus A7V333 with all the auto settings left in place.
-XP2400+ 266 bus 1.65v core (AXDA2400DKV3C), BIOS at 15x133/33 (Auto)
-Coolermaster aero 7+
-340w PSU (I know, I know, I should really be upgrading this cos of the stuff I have plugged in)

Other stuff
-2xHDD, 3xCD-RW/DVD-RW -GeForce 2 MX400 64MB
-Adaptec SCSI card -10/100 Lan card
-Firewire card  -USB powered KVM switch -USB webcam
