Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. Had a search, but could find nowt. In other games i've only even seen 'Sensitivity'. Put it up, and a small move of the mouse equates to a big move of the viewpoint. Seems to be pretty much the same for infantry in BF2, but how to pitch and yaw fit in? I've noticed when flying (either plane or heli) or driving that upping the sensitivity makes it more twitchy with small mouse movements but it doesn't seem to make it turn any faster. I never seem to be able to corner as fast as planes i'm chasing in dogfights and such. So i'm guessing that sensitity is how small a movement it considers to be valid, but pitch and yaw affect how fast/tight it will actually turn. Is that right? If I drop my sensitivity down but up my pitch and yaw on the jets will I be able to turn tighter but not have so much of the horrific twitchness that results from me being unable to get my joystick perfectly calibrated?

I would just test this myself, but it's kinda hard to judge when you're not flying with other vehicles, and if I tried it on an online server I feel people would be annoyed with me trashing all the jets to try and get my controls right ;) So I thought i'd see if I could find someone here who could give me an answer, *then* i'll go prod stuff once I have an idea what sort of effect it will have.

I think that you're trying to steer the plane using just the 'yaw'. In other words you're just banking the plane which tends to turn it slowly.

You need to introduce the rudder as well. Turn the rudder in the same direction as you're banking and you will turn tighter. Remember to adjust your pitch at the same time.

If this is complete tosh then 'Wing Commander Blueball' will be along any minute now with the right answer.

I tend to find that the quickest way of turning it is to bank to vertical, then 'pull up', which because you're vertical of course turns you horizontally. But i'm looking for any tips on how to fly better, so i'll give actually using the rudder a go too ;)

The big thing to remember is not to think in 2 dimensions! If somebody is in front of you turning horiziontally to the left and you are closing fast and dont think you can out turn him then you can turn "tighter" than him by using the vertical to take up some of your turn; so climbing and turning and then dropping down again will mean that although you both travel the same distance through the air you will have got into a better position behind him (it's called a "yo-yo" manoeuvre and is standard air tactics)

See figure 2.5 on this page for an illustration of something I'm not explaining well ;)

The sensitivity side of things is basically allowing you to adjust the sensitivity in each of the three axes - say your mouse can move forwards/backwards quickly but is sluggish left to right then that will be difficult to fly. You can balance the sensitivities to maker it equally responsive in each axis.

All fighter combat boils down to energy. the person with the most energy has the advantage. Energy is in the form of speed, height or both. If you are higher than someone then you have more energy. If he tries to get away you have the energy to chase him. However, if his aircraft is faster then after a while he might have more energy than you. In short just because you have the advantage doesn't mean you can keep it ;)

Hope this helps - y'all still awake at the back?  ;)
