Heheh, I beat him to it.

I voted Yes... I have to admit, that even though I consider myself broad minded when it comes to music, I am having a really hard time listening to that genre...

Any genre that glorifies guns, drugs and gang violence, treats women like dirt and is openly racist and homophobic....

IS NOT RIGHT :ranting:

Hmmm, I disagree, to me Rock and roll has been gloriying(discussing) those things for years, think heavy metal, punk, oi, death metal, country, pop music (have you ever listended to the Young Guns go for it - Wham! (I know I know but you could argue it degrades women) etc even the Beach boys songs brag about getting of with women.

Rappers will argue that they are not glorifying those things, but simply writing about what they see happening around them - and yes I'm sure some make things up. The reality is that the majority of rappers do come from some of the more deprived areas of society (particularly in the US/france/etc). I liken them to modern day poets.

Of course there are always exceptions and extremists in any music genre ie NWA, 2 live crew etc and I don't agree with racism, violence, degrading women, but like everything in life I can make a choice about what I listen too and what I don't.

Its hard to judge people unless you've been in their shoes.

And yes, I like Rap music, I like music that says something and has attitude, give me that anyday of the week over boy bands.

I think you should also define modern/hip hop?

Hip hop isn't music. Hip hop is a cultural movement and embraces rap (which is what your talking about), graffitti, break dancing, a style of clothing, talking, even encompassing politics and skipping (double dutch - remember malcom mclaren song?).

First a history lesson - but goes some ways to explain why rappers rap about women/drugs/violence etc

Rap origins grew initally from jamaicans who would toast over dubs at sound clashes (now called blues parties). Americans took this music and evolved it, coupled with their anger/desperation at living in slums/poverty/violence and the overwhelming racism that blacks in the US have always received (and to be fair is still not much better for the majority today), rap grew steadily in the 70's.

You've always had rappers talking about guns/drugs/women listen to the - Grandmaster flash - 'The Message' because thats what they see day to day. These themes continued and evolved into hardcore gangsta rap which began in late 80's with NWA, Gangstarr etc and continued into the early 90's with Ice T, Ice Cube, Snoopy, Dre and then went out of favour mid 90s. But rap has always addressed these issues.

50 cent is simply immitating rappers from the late 80's early 90's.

Listen to NWA - Straight outa compton or Ice T- Original Gangsta, Ice Cube  etc if you want to hear some original gangsta rap - though you probably dont  :D

All genres of music generally promote killing in some way or another, rap - Guns, metal -blunt object, death metal - your bare hands, D&B - overdosing (its not in the lyrics but it seems to be what everyone does when they go to raves), indie rock - promoting suicide. It's all EVIL!
But thats a bit off the point i think that SOME (very rarely) hip hop can be ok. Dead Prez for instance, but people such as fiddie cent (50cent) just make me angry and want to 'pop a cap in their ASS'

jeez I can write some guff when I want too  :roflmao:

By modern hip/hop rap, I mean exactly that. What the intial protest music (based on the failings of everyday culture, which was initially rooted in gospel, soul and r'n'b, and then rap) has now become.

The over commercialised artists of today are so far away from the Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill, NWA, Public Enemy type artists, that the point has been lost. Occasionally artists actually return to the roots of hip-hop (Nas, Kanye West, some of Jay-Z) and actually have genuine political and social grievances to rap about, and their ability "to overcome" the hardships they face.

All too often however we see badly written music and poorly crafted lyrics tacked together by a big name label/producer, talking about how many people a person has shot, how many women they've had, how much drugs they've taken etc. In Da Club by Fifty Cent is a prime example, a repetitive synth riff involving basic chords, with lyrics centering on hedonistic pleasures and homophobia. This makeths not good music IMHO.

I am not sure if anyone else on the forum watched the program about music provoking violence last night on bbc 1 or 2. Anyway, i did and it talked about the problems that heavy metal music is causing with the culture that death is good and so is satan. Now hip hop might be slightly over the top and i do like all of 50 cents songs but having kids under 18 killing each other due to bands like slayer and other heavy metal bands making this almost the norm is disgraceful. The ironic point to make however is that on the show there was a Catholic Priest and he was dressed in a devils costume and on stage openly talking about satan and how good he was. I know these people are sometime cult followers but surely 50 cent is not that bad! Personally i think he's cool ;)

I imagine if you took a proper survey of each of these communities you might be embarassed by how gullible you are to over excitable "bad science" media scare stories :narnar:

Hippy

The only 'rap' music i like is by Kanye West, catchy tunes and good samples.

I don't like 50 cents attitude.

BTW has any one noticed the inclusion of eminem/d12 to kerrangs playlist?

I like Slayer but i've never had the earge to go and slaughter some people or animals.

Admittedly people do take it a bit too far, one example being a few years ago some band that was a member of a sadist group in Italy, (there are hundreds of sadist groups in italy btw) were playing at a gig then at the end 2 of the band members got the other 2 band members to sacrifice them... What the fudge is that all about?!?!

But generally i don't think that's because of the music... Probably bad parenting. All anti-social behavior sees to come back to that.
