ok hopefully this thread can get pinned as it could get quite full

anyhow i thought id start a list of online games that are free to d/l and play

first off ogame

OGame is a strategic space simulation game with thousands of players competing with each other simultaneously. All you need to play is a standard web browser.

What is OGame about?
As an intergalactic emperor you can strengthen your influence throughout the galaxies by numerous strategies. Beginning your rulership at your homeworld you begin to build an economic and military infrastructure with your resources. Researching new techniques and upgrading your buildings and researches gives you access to superior technologies and improved weapon systems. During the game you have the option to colonize planets and to create alliances together with friendly emperors. Trading with other players and fighting against enemy empires helps you to get the resources you need to prosper even more quickly.

the good thing is, is that its browser based so no downloads required there is also a forum for game related stuff ogame forum

ok 2nd game, i got some interest of twig about this today as he'd noticed id been playing it on xfire  navy field

and this i s what it is, its a mmorpg ww2 naval game, you have to build up your resources by battleling out in the open sea arrrrrrr. when you have enough money you can buy better ships, you also have levels which determione what ships you can buy, good game full introduction  is on the website

3rd secondlife

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by nearly 100,000 people from around the globe.

From the moment you enter the World you’ll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Once you’ve explored a bit, perhaps you’ll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business.

You’ll also be surrounded by the Creations of your fellow residents. Because residents retain the rights to their digital creations, they can buy, sell and trade with other residents.

The Marketplace currently supports millions of US dollars in monthly transactions. This commerce is handled with the in-world currency, the Linden dollar, which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online currency exchanges.

anyway feel free to add more below for the benefit of other members of this forum

WARNING OGAME CAN TAKE UP LOTS OF YOUR TIME

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

There was a turn based space game that was quite good at N42 for a while, would sit well here, forming little alliances, trade runs etc.....

Can't for the life remember it but I will.

This months PC Gamer has loads of games on from independents, some quite good ones. Try some of these. http://www.igf.com/2006entrants.shtml
