I've just been idly reading various forum and noticed, along with online gaming, that the word n00b, which we know is short for newbie or an inexperienced person, is being used as an insult equated with stupidity. Usually not in a jocular way but quite vehemently. Just thought I'd share that observation with you. Sad ennit?

sheepy

on some publics and some forums its over used, but i dont think that there is any need 2 ban it around here as its not used very much as we have a very friendly comunity, well except smite anyway

I don't see it as being insulting per se. It's all about context.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to CS mapping for instance. I wouldn't find it insulting if someone made a reference to that fact.

However if it was used as part of a general insult then maybe it would be another matter. However we're all big boys and girls here, so I think we can take a few knocks as we go along. I would be more upset that the friendly nature of the forum and community would be undermined than that a specific word was used in a post. There's nothing wrong with disagreement or putting a contrary view. I would be sad to see discussion, debate and constructive arguement banned from the forum. However pointless insults are not something  I think we'd want to read on the forum.

So long live the Noob  :D  and down with the noob :x

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

It's obvious to me that some folks are n00bs at 'tongue in cheek'. Not once did I infer that it was a problem on this forum or our servers, so don't be so defensive! I have not been called a n00b so it wasn't motivated by a personal jibe. My observation was, that the word n00b has become a derogatary remark rather than a descriptive one. Even if you are inexperienced at mapping it doesn't mean you should be insulted for it..........Aah! On second thoughts, I'm going back to bed.

If u get called a nOOb just do as i do and remind them about your sexual exploits with their mother :oops: they tend to forget u are a nOOb and quicky move onto other interesting topics of conversation  :twisted:

But what if you've not sexually exploited their Mother? Are you allowed to lie? :wink:

Or what if you're their Father?

Saying 'i have sexually exploited your Mother!' might result in a "well, obviously, Dad" type response.

Yawn, stretch. Where was I? Ah yes n00bs. I think the point I was trying to make is that n00b has replaced the VERY naughty word preceded by the other VERY naughty word ending in 'ing' by some sections of the........ah forget it, I'm bored with this now.

yeah can we also ban:

m8 = mate
2 = to
wtf = what the fubar
cus = because
u = you

and all other next abreviations. Mind you that would leave sheepy a little short on the vocabulary front.
