CoD 2 was a good game, but I think CoD 4 has evolved the gameplay somewhat and is much better, and we are in the process of testing CoD4 on a dMw server with the plan to roll it out to all once we've worked out how it fits in with our 'tactical gameplay uber alles' ethos.

the COD4 server will be open to all members of DMW once the little creases have been ironed out and hopefully it will be soon

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

I would like to know how? This is serious question and not trolling etc. I have Cod2, but what I have seen screenies and read the improvement has happened only in the gfx department. :g:

I am happy if you can convince me otherwise.

I understand and like the tactical idea over everything else. I just fear CoD4 works with too small maps (just like CoD2 did).

Xenon

According to me much better the game experience in the CoD2-ben. True, that there are small maps in a dog,but it is good for a tactical community punctually according to me.and taking a World War two game into the society would be a brainwave according to me anyway, and we've already a modern wartime game.:g:

So why not would be good the CoD2?:)

You could be right. I admit i've never played CoD4 on a non-dMw server, due to my dislike of playing on servers with completely random people who don't make an effort to play tactically and who I don't know at all (I lurked and posted on the dMw forums for a good long while before playing on the servers). My main CoD2 experiences were on our work server with workmates before I discovered dMw, where it tended to just be straight deathmatch but was still fun cos the people involved were actually in the office with me and we were just having a laugh about the whole thing. I do prefer the 'dMw way' though, and it may just be the people who i've played each game with colouring my opinions.

Having adopted COD4 and encouraged people to buy it, we now have a good core of players.

It would neither be reasonable nor logical to ask them to go out and buy an older version of the same game.

I do not know how game play has evolved since COD2 but either way it's *highly* unlikely (imho of course) that we'll start playing COD2 (That's for people like Armitage - the COD Section Admin - to decide).

The actual gameplay of COD2 is very simular to COD4.

Pen, it is not a same game! Now CoD series has 2 kind of war games. And the CoD 2 is the newest version of the World War 2 games of the CoD series what we can play on PC.

At least CoD2 doesn't have perks. Hope they remove the dummy idea from the 5th version :sideways:

I think Xenon didn't ask anybody to buy Cod2, but who has it already and if these people could try to play it here. If you were playing CoD2 sometimes I could certainly join that to see how you play. Now my copy is just collecting dust and I fear that if I get CoD4 it ends the same place. If you manage to get more out of CoD2 I could seriously consider getting the 4th version.

Generally I prefer games like ArmA. It might not be so graphically polished screenshot generator like Cod4, but I think it has more depth, tactical possibilities and doesn't make you feel like playing in a sand box.

Tottally agree there, Poor new light bulb as bright as he may be just could not get his point across in a way that other people could read (reffering to the Light bulb aspect of his/her name rather than IQ). yes I have the full CoD range, and to be honest I wasnt going to get the CoD4 as the rest have been installed and registered and then left to gather dust and take up space on my Hardrives, I was kinda hoping that the CoD4 would be a fad thoughout the community but it looks as though it is a serious contender to BF2/2142 especially as its ranked, and so have shelled out the £40 for the special edition (always do this for some reason)....

Yes there are better games out there than the ones mentioned and yes i play some of them (mainly demo's to begin with), but this is the game of the cominity of the moment if a member of the comunity has another game they would like to play and is asking other members if they would like to play it (if they have it etc.) then there is no harm in it and they can either set up a quick match between themselves on there own machines or join another public server if a server is not/cannot be provided, as this is the whole point of a comunity structure to enable you to meet people and enjoy our hobbies and fav games together, and with such a diverse amount of people as this comunity it is enevitable that people would like to play games that are not available on the DmW servers for operational reasons (costs, bandwidth, etc..), and so we shouldn't shun these people for being different as it takes away what this comunity is all about. We have such an active forum and servers that it is one of the best places to be on the net as there is always something going off.

obviously Xenon's post was misinterprited and so it was Jumped on and i understand that and dont want to draw away from the fact that we have a diverse and varied member base and yes if there is a game that someone wants to play and i have it and also enjoy playing it (or to reminiss on the old times) i would happily have a game with one of the community members as I know you guys and I know you wouldnt take the p*ss (langauge timothy) as it doesnt fit in with our ethos of playing/community style, which over the last few months i have seen a number of the older members also forgetting which is unfortunate as we do actually have a great comunity.

anyways sorry for the long rant but my 2p's worth had to be in there.
Are you going to come quietly, or do I have to use earplugs?

What happened with COD3?

@Aquilifer - What is Arma like I have been pondering a purchase for a while now.

CoD 3 was a console only offering. Came out for 360, PS3 (IIRC) and Wii. I bought the Wii version, not expecting to get amazing graphics but hoping for some good old CoD gameplay and possibly the first ever FPS to work on a console given the Wii's control system. I was sorely disappointed. It went back to the shop.

I think games like CoDs are ment for different sort of players than ArmA. CoDs are FPS games clearly, while ArmA is kind of squad-platoon level combat simulator. So they are not directly comparable and actually BF2 would be closer to ArmA. ArmA is actually a light weight version (game version) of Virtual Battlespace (VBS, not sure about version 1 or 2), which is used in many armys for training. Actually you can buy VBS1 for $150-780 depending on the number of modules.

The biggest difference is clearly the size of the battlefield. In CoDs you can through a granade across the map (many MP maps). In the vanilla ArmA you get the default map (island) which is maybe 10x10km, with different kinds of environments from towns and forests, to mountains and sand dunes. This gives lot of room to air operations (helo transport and air support) and tactical maneuvers. People have created themselves bigger and smaller maps too, as well as new vehicles and weapons. Also the forests feel like forests with thousands of trees, grass, flowers, butterflyes etc. If you don't have a map and compass you can get lost, but navigation is possible with sun, stars, road signs etc. Also in CoD the map usually changes with the mission, while in ArmA the battle location just changes somewhere else on the same map (in the SP campaign).

For myself the large maps must be the biggest reason and the user content creation ability 2nd. The graphics isn't CoD4 level, but you can make it look very good if you put the settings high. But the requirement for CPU and GPU can get bit high then (my C2D E6750 and GF8800GTS is perfectly enough). I guess ArmA has to back up little in graphics in favor for huge map sizes - opposite for CoD4.

There is ArmA2 coming soon (sometime 2008)

Like Ghoule, I have no desire to buy a game to see it sitting idly on my shelf gathering dust (TF2 anyone?).

Having spent a lot of time and effort by BB and crew getting the COD4 servers up, we need people to embrace the game and make it a success.

I presumed - it looks like erroneously - that COD2 is an older version of COD4. For that I apologise. I'm not jumping on him on purpose nor for the hell of it. I'm just very much aware the COD4 is in its infancy here and we need to pull behind it to make it a success - lest it go the way that other games have.
