Interesting read, Many thanks for the info. It would seem this is the case for my license too. On the front i have the 4a and 4b and the dates are exactly 10 years apart. On the back i can drive until around 70 years old for each category. So the i too may need to renew and so pay the fee in 2013.

I understand that the photo id will need to be updated over time etc, but to charge £17.50 on top of the extortionate price it costs to get the provisional licence and the cost of the test etc makes it a bit of a joke.
You can't even use the trick of updating the photo when you change address as the expiry date stays the same.

I didn't now this, mine expires in 2012. They should send out a reminder/form a couple of months before, like they do with car tax. I very rarely use my license so the chance of me remembering in 4 years time is slim.

QuoteThe DVLA said failure to update the photocard after 10 years fell into the same category as failing to inform them of a change of address.

I'll just add that I forgot to update my address for well over a year, in fact my wife neglected hers for almost 4 years. ( it was left as her parent's address ). We didn't see any fines and had no trouble when we updated our details.

That's interesting.

I had to check mine just in case. In Finland the license expires the same day as the right to drive a car. In my case 2047. The other difference is that we do not have to inform if we move to another address. The license card doesn't even have the home address. All this even the license is the EU type.

I cannot remember how much exactly I had to pay for the card itself, but no way near 17 pounds.

Hmm mine has 4a. 14-02-07, the date my license was issued, but 4b. 25-06-16, for some reason, which isn't quite 10 years but that's a bit of a random date if you ask me.
