woot seems like swapping out 2 x 8800gt sli for a gtx 260 oc as compinsation for the comp f'ing up under warenty paid out a little

Nice read. Interesting to see how well a single HD 4870 (1GB) does and how more memory on the card really matters. Considering how closely priced the 512 and 1024MB version are, at least here, there can be only one

There is only a major difference at the res of a 30" monitor though, and few people have one of those. I've got a 24" here and I can run Far Cry 2 with all settings (apart from AA, which i have on 2x cos anything above that i can't tell the difference) maxed out and it runs smooth as you like on a 4870 512MB.

True, and if you go down to 1280x1024 (I am on a 19") the performance is equal regardless of versions. But then again, over here the price diff is only approx. £30? :g:Are all 4870s crossfire-ready?

As far as I know, yes. I was asking a similar thing a while back when I was building this PC, and it seems that all ATI cards have been crossfire ready since about the 2xxx range.

Okay cheers. And I have to ask: how much does crossfire (or SLI) provide on top? 50%? and what are the variables/bottlenecks?
