Does anyone know where I can get hold of a good freebie wifi scanners (where it shows the location)?
 Bring on the randomness!
Apparently I actually exist! Or maybe it was the drink?

i remember click had a device that could scan and show you which wifi networks were nearby. However, has your phone got wifi if it has maybe use that as getting a laptop out to see if wifi is around is annoying.

Not really sure what do you want from it, but I have used netstumbler to get the channels sort out. I find it really good.

netstumbler can be paired with a direction-sensitive antenna so you can find out where the signal is coming from - IIRC. Check out the app, they have some details there.

To get a good position it has to have a GPS interface.

A WiFi IPAQ with a GPS unit and WiFi-FoFum does the trick and has a radar screen.
