It just seems to be me that everyone is so quick to bash apple for their ipods and iphones which - however misguided - have sold (apparently) 200 million units and 20 million units respectively. I think it was more the sheep mentality bit that got my goat (as it were).

As for dogmatism, well it's hardly an unusual word.

There is no doubt that Apple makes some very brilliant and user-friendly items, such as the iPhone and all the different iPods. However, the whole philosophy Apple has, focusing on lock-in and rigid restrictions on how you are allowed to use their products and what products/software/whatever of others you can use with their products, is completely despicable. That's pretty much all there is to it :2cents:

And also, owning an Apple product might seem to have become more like a "fashion" thing than a "quality" thing...

I agree with Bob. It's very much a fashion thing. In terms of features and upgradeability the iPod and iPhones are way down the list of best buys. In terms of looks and UI they're at the top.
Just because something is the most popular doesn't make it the best. However just because I dislike something, doesn't mean it's bad.

The iPhone is best described as a jack-of-all trades, master of none phone.

If you want great email, get a Blackberry. If you want a great camera, get a Sony etc etc. But if you want everything done to a decent standard, and combined with the best UI I've ever used, then the iPhone is the one to get

I agree. The UI does sell the phone. However I also agree that sadly many people will have bought an iPhone because it's an iPhone and not because it actually was any real use to them. The original version was a complete dog feature wise and that's not an opinion, it's a statement of fact

No 3G, no video, no You-tube, no MMS, no cut and paste, no document editing, a grotty little camera with no configurable features, below average music playback quality, no horizontal keyboard, no removable battery.... the list goes on.

If it had been the SonyPhone or the MotorollaPhone it would have failed completely. The army of Apple fanatics made sure it was a success as they'll frankly buy anything with a little apple on it. The silky UI and the complete lack of touch screen competition added to the popularity. Apple realised they had a winner and have been fixing the horrible omissions to the iPhone ever since. So now with the new 3Gs and the V3 operating system the phone is finally worth it's popularity. (and Penfold is not a pillock for owning one :wink: )

What I find lacking in the current iPhone though is not the features, but the way I'd be locked into the complete festering mess that is iTunes, the inability to be able to have a phone on the network I want or the tariff I want and to have it locked down so I cannot install the applications I want.

I don't know too much about other phones such as the HTC etc.

I am hacked that iphones won't let you use firefox and, although know nothing about Google Voice, agree that blocking out features is wrong. I don't mind them being affiliated to one provider but not letting one get full functionality is another.

I guess many people hack or crack their phones. I like it as the kids just love the apps you can get with it, I like the ipod part and I don't mind itunes.

I see they now do TomTom for the iphone which is interesting. I have a tomtom 910 and it's super - problem is that it'd be nice to have a trial before forking out for it. I can't see how it can possibly compete.

Sorry if I ranted at you Zoots, it wasn't you per se. It's just that people seem to be so passionately opinionated about such things (either for or against). I decided on the iPhone having had a motorola E71 and a blackberry. I liked the E71 but the screen was too small and the Blackberry is a bit worky for me. My mobiles tends to be more for personal than professional use and I do like the full screen for reading the forums and the zoom bit. It also works well for the emails and such.

For me, stick FF on it and I'd be happy. I'll probably stay with it now I've had one and when my current contract ends no doubt I'll get the later version (althought I'd like mroe of a play with Smilo's HTC (?) at the LAN. I was a bit too pished at TL's to give it a thorough play.

Anyway, like I say, the Kids love it and keeping them quiet for an hour or so playing games or watching High School Flipping Musical videos is worth its weight in gold :flirty:.

It's weird this Mac v PC thing.
My eldest boy, brought up with a PC as the (my) tool of choice, longed for a Mac as his first lappy.
We got him one when he did the biz with his GCSE's and he has been on Macs ever since.
He got himself an iphone from the US as soon as they came out, and payed for a software crack to run it on any network.
The iphone itself is amazing. I am impressed by everything about it, especially the web browsing and google earth.
I believe he payed about Ã,Â£30 for the crack, and he gets support and updates for it on an ongoing basis.
If I didn't regularly drop my phone in a bucket of plaster/off the scaffold/in the sink, I'd consider getting one myself.

I presume you can't run things like MS office, Steam, CS and CoD on a Mac can you ?

Indeed you were as it was still two weeks away from it's global launch and no one actually had one at the BBQ. Maybe you were thinking about Gandy's HTC Magic?

Microsoft do a version of Office for the Mac (I think 2008 is the latest). It's arguably better than the PC version, but the Exchange implementation is a bit gimped.

You know, you can always dual-boot Windows on a Mac Just as long as you dont mind having to reboot just to fire up a game or two..

As the GPS chip in the iPhone aint something to woop about, there can be some problems when using the iPhone alone.
They are suppose to fix it with the mount coming out for it, with an extra builtin gps chip, but this is limited to the car, where besides the size, the 910 would do just about as well.

Granted I am currently using and old phone which can call people and write text messages, which is good enough..
The HTCs and Blackberries all look quite smooth, but I don't think Id enjoy any of them, as they just look too, with lack of a better word, pro.

They make a fairly big deal about being able to run MS office, but things like games it can't run. There are a few games that come out with special mac versions, but not many. I think more come out with Linux versions.

Since the introduction of bootcamp you can run windows on a mac for gaming, though after you've spent so much extra spec for spec to get a mac it seems a waste. They do seem to come bundled with a load of software for making movies etc, but if I have to run windows for 80-90% of my proper computing it's better to use it for 100% is my opinion. Same reason I don't use Linux, and that's free.
