Using Smoke?

I've not been playing Arma2 for very long and so this conversation may already have happened and been addressed. But I was wondering about the use of smoke and if we should be using it more.

Last night we had issues with getting shot while healing team mates or immediately after being healed. I think I got shot two or three times while healing and on several other occasions I had no idea if I was about to be fired on or exactly where the enemy were when I was healing. It was a case of run in and prey.

However I don't see us throwing smoke very often if at all. I've read in several guides that smoke is important when moving and fighting in the enemy towns. Do we not use smoke much for a reason? I cannot see why we wouldn't unless it doesn't work effectively. I know the AI seems able to see through long grass where we cannot. Do they also see through smoke (serious bug if they can)? If smoke is an effective visual screen against the AI then should we be making sure we carry a few canisters as a matter of routine.

There is no reason why we don't I don't carry due to I like having more bullets

That's understandable, although with ammo drops we might be OK. It was just that last night the fighting got pretty intense and close quarters. Several times one of us would get shot only for the healer to get shot as he came to the rescue and then a third  player also goes down trying to heal the first two. As to where the fire was coming from, we often had no idea, so running in and healing was a dangerous task. A few smoke grenades and we may well have been OK. Next time I am a medic I'll try to equip some and see how effective it is.

Smoke is essential, I've come to understand.

I always take 4 M203 smokies alongside 4 HE. Doesn't affect ammo loadout but is a bit more difficult to deliver with any accuracy.

To save bullets and carry smoke, equip it as an M203 round for the mk17 eglm. The winners gun.
Alternatively use the artillery smoke option, we can allow that, it's much better :)
