I guess this was kinda what I was aiming for. For what its worth here is how I *think* it may pan out. Chris Roberts will try to allow for every eventuality. If people like engineering, he'll allow people to repair their own ships (with resources of course), but for those that don't, they'll be space ports for that.

I'm (again assuming) that he'll take a similar approach with a lot of things. Its already been suggested that SAR will be a role. With something like that in there, there is a high chance we'll be seeing medics too, at least to some degree. We know there is going to be planet side work - be that FPS or otherwise. We can take guesses at these roles and form some categories if you're up for it?  We've seen interdiction as a role, exploration/scanning and obviously heavier military roles. With the level of customization we're likely to get we can pretty much make our ships do what we need them to. Hey, bit of planning never hurt anyone!

Hard to pick a role really. I thought I'd try what I could in my avenger: supposedly good for hauling people in its base spec, so bounty hunting and SAR could be a good fit. I figured that later on I might be able to kit it out with a big engine for carrying small quantities of high value goods around quickly, ...and for running away from dogfights. Add a fat cannon for sniping the unwary from afar and interdiction could be fun :-D

Although I prefer a trading or tactical approach to most games I could probably act as a small fighter to assist in protecting salvage and trading ships using my Super Hornet
