Fleet roles?

Has any thought been given to peoples roles within the fleet? I know people will want to be able to do whatever they want, but has anyone thought about how they want to work within our fleet? I'd love to do Search and Rescue work! Got a Phoenix too so it'd be classy :coolio:

I've thought about it, but not extensively as I'm still not sure of the degree to which each role will fulfill a gamer's need.   I'm guessing that during beta of the PU we'll get to flesh these roles out more specifically.  SAR will be fun for sure and yesterday's '10 for the Chairman' mentioned it as getting generated missions etc, but we just don't know enough about the roles to compare them.   I'm also interested in Exploration, Resource Management, Salvage, Jump Charting and Economy and that's just the list I currently think I'll want to try!   I suspect it will grow longer and more detailed as we progress through the beta :)

We also need to know more about the game mechanics. I want to explore but I also want to be there when we are working together on a task. If the game only allows one main character and my character is just too far away for me to help then that's not going to work for me. I'm hoping there's a way for me to jump between my ships using an alt so I can do both.

Agreed, things will become clearer as the game develops. I'm not sure how moving about the universe will work. Hopefully RSI will keep things fun though and not frustrating just for the sake of authenticity. Hopefully there should be a mechanic for getting 'home' quickly. Maybe with a jump drive you just jump from A to B and then motor the last bit through sub light space. All will become clear I guess. For me I'm looking at dog fighting, bounty hunting and running escort, either in my own ship or gunning for one of the big ship owners. I also quite fancy doing salvage in the Aegis Surveyor.

I guess for the large part i'm not really interested in the PvP aspect of the game. I'm more of a coop kind of guy. I'm hoping they're going to allow you to board 'space-hulks' for salvage and the like. Exploration, SAR/Medical though otherwise.

+1 for me, although it's less that I don't like PVP and more that I'm really bad at it! :roflmao:

I don't think that can be answered until people get a feel for what the game offers at full release. At the moment I want to be more of a 'support' ship for other fleet members, a kind of 'Deadmen Space Defence Force' a bit like the RAF here on earth.

I'll do a bit of exploration but I get more joy out if supporting others and protecting us from any little so and so that wants to have go :P and I prefer the smaller ships so that bodes well

But that may change once we get in the verse for real

Exploration protection and general attack dog,

You lot hook 'em, and I'll clean 'em and fry 'em ;)

I'll bear that in mind. I'm a pretty good pilot, but a dog fighter I am not. :D

Amen to that. Aye. I prefer the support roles more so too, however, i'm really looking forward to the larger ships. Just being part of a crew should be a good laugh. SO... when we saving up for a org Idris? ::coolio:: Not that i'm getting ahead of myself at all....

Really quite hard to say until I know what my Cutlass is capable of and, as others have mentioned, what the game mechanics feel like.

On paper it looks like a good fleet escort/hunter-killer, but we'll have to wait and see.....

A bit early to say right now, but having some sort of division or roles I guess is not such a bad idea. What we did in my corp in EVE was that we had two divisions; Military and Industry. Each memeber was asked to put one as their main focus in the game, and that would help recruiters know what to look for when taking in new members. Being in a division didn't isolate you to doing that role, but it reflected what your main focus in the game was in regards to assets and skills. I'm thinking something like this could very easily be adopted for SC.

That sounds a good idea. we've played a lot of MMO's in our time and that's all about picking a role (tank, healer, DPS). As long as it's not set in stone, a few sub groups within the Organisation sounds like a plan.

In SC I think it will be more about getting the "correct" fleet composition when we head out. So say we set a guiding combatant to support ratio for set tasks, and swap into appropriate ships depending on who is attending and what people can bring. Having a set role for every person will most likely be impossible, as attendance may vary from day to day. We will all need to be flexible in what we can bring to the table to some extent. Bringing the right tools for the job will benefit everyone in the long run, even though it may require someone to fly their second favorite ship as opposed to their favorite one.

Excellent points Vargen, we'll need to flesh things like this out as we get to know more about the game - I bet EVE did not kick off with that level of organisation, it grew over a period of time as the game developed and evolved.
