Perhaps I'm being stupid...

This will probably come off a bit ranty at points but feel free to correct me if you spot a glaring error. At this point, any help would be great otherwise I'm sacking SC off for a long while.

Haven't played any SC recently and decided to try out the new flight training. First headache was that no matter what custom XML profile for the X55 I put in the D:/BlahBlah/CitizenClient/Users/mappings folder (I have my OS booting of an SSD and the games stored on a regular HDD. I've checked the hidden folders in the original C:/Users folder in case, like Elite, there are folders hidden inside the AppData folder. But couldn't see anything for CIG or SC) but SC doesn't seem to know about it. Alright, I'll use the built in X55 setup with some tweaks but I didn't change anything on the throttle setup.

Get through the basic take off (despite the vertical strafe trying to slam me into the ceiling after doing a 70 degree axial roll for some reason), did axial roll, basic weapons. When I came to do the landing/re-arm, thats where I lost my rag. Requested landing okay, approached the pad manually but as soon as I get close, the throttle just wigs the f**k out, suddenly leaping from 0 to -14 or up to +30. Bearing in mind, I wasn't touching the throttle, didn't even have a hand on it. Got the ship sitting still and tried strafing forward over it but as soon as you get near the pad, the ship starts racing backwards or forwards. I even tried strafing sideways onto the pad but same thing. Get near it, ship flies backwards and bounces off the asteroid. At this point, I hit Crtl-F4, politely announced where Chris Roberts could forcibly insert the game and went to watch a film.

I did consider it might be an intermittent fault with the hardware itself so I tried Elite Dangerous, and it was flawless. Dicked around for half an hour, no problems whatsoever. Loaded SC back up, went into free flight. The controls have always felt a bit 'twitchy' in SC (especially the throttle but thats probably a matter of adjusting the deadzone/curves on the throttle) but again, that was fine so god knows why in flight training, the controls spazz out like no ones business. Anyhoo, as hyperbolic and overly dramatic as it sounds, I'm not going to waste my time with the game until its more stable, not when Elite works so well and without issue. The really annoying thing is that its not like I'm a novice when it comes to space sims with full newtonian flight, I'm a proud veteran of multiple playthroughs of I-War and I-War 2 Edge of Chaos, which are still some of my favourite space games ever.

Hi ZigZag,

The first thing to note about the tutorial is that it is quite heavily bugged at the moment, and although I haven't experienced the landing pad issues that you have, I have seen some YouTube videos where others are having the same problems.  I'm not sure if it's contoller related or not, but with hindsight, I think the videos I saw this happening on we're with X55 controllers (I hav an X52).

The second thing about the tutorial is that it progresses way too fast in my view. You go from sitting in your ship, knowing next to nothing, to battling multiple Vanduul, having gone through practically every ship subsystem, all in a matter of minutes without any real chance to absorb all of the information. Personally, I find the pace a little overwhelming.

So, my advice would be to simply make a note of how it's supposed to work and then go into the Free Flight map and practice without the pressure of having to keep up with an NPC tutor.

Im trying to get some free time regularly out aside to help set up some Star Citizen flight school evenings for us all to get into the game together and have a play around, so stick with it and keep an eye out for those.

Regarding your X55, how are you setting up the XML file? Are you using the built-in profile and then amending it? If so, then you need to Export the settings if you want to ensure that the changes you make stick. Files are stored in the \USER\Controls\Mappings folder.  This gets overwritten whenever there's a new patch deployed, so you should take a copy of it and then copy it back after you apply a new patch.

+1 for this.  Let me know and how I can help and/or get involved!

ZigZg, I feel your pain matey. I think I only managed to get through the tutorial because I have experienced about every nuance the game has to offer in Free Flight so far so I knew how to work around the bugs.

Obsydian was very helpful in advising me how to work with the controller files and export settings, tweak them and I can help anyone 1:1 on TS with this just PM me. It does take quite a lot of tuning especially since the sensitivity settings are too high by default and any strafing/ thruster movement you have to do in the tutorial is spoiled by the sensitivity. I think there are quite a few settings that can be reliably mapped in game. In order to do a flight school session certain basic functions have to be working, basic flight control for example and each pilot would have to go through a bit of pain before the school session to get full advantage of any advice and avoid spending the whole session mapping keys.
Cheers, Bert

I'll be up for that as well!
I also find SC far too twitchy on the stick, but interestingly too laggy on the mouse.

QuoteRegarding your X55

I'd also love to chat with any TFlight X HOTAS owners because I just can't set mine up.
Maybe I'm spoiled in Elite where you can setup HOTAS keys as a shift modifier which works great on the HAT.
You can do this in SC with a keyboard key, but AFAIK not with a HOTAS key and my budget entry HOTAS just doesn't have the same numer of buttons as the X55, etc, at the higher end hence the shift modifier approach.

Righto, I've calmed down since yesterday. I think a combination of a long, trying day and then SC not playing ball took its toll and led to a mini-freakout but I'm all better now. Its a fair point to expect an alpha build to be buggy, so I'll wait and see. I'm fairly familar with most of the concepts - the things I'm still unsure on are the comstab/g-safe/decoupled/IFCS (sp?) and a few of those other modes, so I might just watch a video tutorial to learn those. I was primarily interested in the Flight Training purely for something to do, if I'm honest. Especially since the Mustang Beta seems to have lost two of its gun mountings and the fact it no longer appears in the list of ships to fly in Vanduul Swarm (leaving me with just the Avenger), there isn't much to do.

I did a search on the RSI forums and found one someone else had configured. I've done this previously so I'm aware of how to set it up but since the last patch, SC seems to ignore the XML file I pasted into the Mappings folder. Curiously, the default X55 I tweaked, I did 'Export' and that now appears in the list of control configs. I'll just take the time to modfy the existing one and save it as a custom file.

And I'd definetely be up for flight school antics.

I'm intentionally following the production and development but staying away from playing (too much). I'm mainly limited to exploring the hangar, and trying out the new things occasionally. I find this way i'm less disappointed by strange bugs and my poor skills. That said, I think i'd be up for some training :)

Thanks for the offer, but it's just personal stuff getting in the way :/

Once I can nail down some time I'll suggest a time to gather and see how it goes.

BTW anyone thinking that "flight school" means you'll be shown what to do will be in for a surprise, because I'm absolutely rubbish, and I think it's going to end up being a case of the blind leading the blind :)

Maybe we can start off gently by playing some coop Vanduul Swarm or Free Flight and trying out each other's ships.   We'll see...

if memory serves, just placing the file in the folder doesn't do anything, you have to import it, otherwise you get just the default settings. Either that or they changed the format of the xml file in some way.

To be honest, multi player is currently a bit dull at the moment, not surprising as there's isn't much to do other than fly about in a relatively small space and shoot at stuff. But with a few friends it could be fun. It's still somewhat buggy as well, so can be a bit frustrating.
