QuoteOver 50,000 people have now voted to name a new £200m polar research ship Boaty McBoatface.

The name is currently leading an online poll by Cambridge-based British Antarctic Survey with 52,659 votes, even though the man who suggested it has apologised.

The second most popular name choice is Henry Worsley - after the explorer who died attempting an Antarctic crossing in January - with 4,894 votes. Third is David Attenborough with 3,823 votes.

The final name will be selected by a panel.

Voted 'Boaty' :D

I'm sure the panel will carefully consider the public's vote and then completely ignore it, picking the name they already had before the poll even went up. I voted and am now the sixty two thousand and sixteenth person to go with Boaty.

Did you notice though, that one of the highest-ranked submissions is from Havelok Vetinari?

So a complete waste of everyones time, I wonder how much money the government wasted on that pointless exercise.

If you don't want to do what the people who voted for you told you to do, then don't ask in the first place. Poppy Mai would be a nice alternative but I guess they will go with the name of some crusty old arctic explorer that no one has heard of or cares about.

I'm so disappointed. They don't realise that little events like this, which lets face it, weren't harming anyone, let people engage with this stuff! Such a shame.
