Is there any LAN games discussion at the moment i.e what we're playing this time round and are we going for legit copies for everyone etc etc.

Or have I been demoted to unter-mensch this time :(

 ;)

No you're still on the Games Committee Smilo :D  I just haven't opened up a private forum for us peeps yet.  I posted a public thread this morning to start a list for discussion, the private forum topic for the games committee will open shortly - you'll see it when I open it!

Ah here it is  :)

Ok in for a penny in for a pound.

Basically we need

1. CS obvioulsy (1.5 or 1.6 or CZ, basically whatever works)

2. Most people seem to be suggesting Halo, no suprises there.

3. Live for Speed worked well last time and we have plenty of experts to get it up and running on everyones machines

4. UT. Deathball and Footie mods were popular.

5. Battlefield 1942/Vietnam or a Call of duty Medal of Honour type.

Based on last time I doubt we need anything extra? Of course there's nothing much new from last time. So maybe something completely new could be added to the list ???

:withstupid:

But i think some want to play that other car game. NFSII or what it is called.

Hopefully there will be a version of BF Vietnam around before the LAN.

I think the above should cover it.  We just need to get the server up and running (Oldie, I'm assuming you are bringing the turbo-nutter bastard or do I need to bring a server?) and test it with the latest mods and patches.

We can have a similar CD system as last time.  We had enough copies to keep peeps happy.

We also had the dMw ftp server to submit our patches, mods etc for testing and such like. Any ideas as to how we submit, share this stuff.

Quite a few dMw members who had access to the ftp server set all the games up before hand (as I did). This did take some load of the Friday night set up mayhem :)

Might it be an idea to set up a temporary repository for the chosen games etc. ?

I will bring at least one server, maybe 2.

I agree With all the games we had at the last LAN.... But not the one's that were proposed and not played. (made sense in my head ;))

LFS - Not sure if it is going to be that popular (apart from me and ron) the new keyboard method has made it very hard for the n00bs.

BF1942/Desert combat - I think this game could have done with more of a play tbh.

CS - of course .....nuff said

UT2003/2004 - I have been playing the demo of 2004 and i really like it, in fact with the added Halo rip-off there may be no need for halo.

Deathball - People keep playing it so bring it on.

New games

Need for speed underground - THis has gained some interest so would be a shame to ignore it.

Call of Duty - I have not played this game on multiplayer but is apparently very good (on single player i cannot play it due to view bob - im a girly wuss i know)

So an addition of only 2 games. Is this OK?

OldBloke

I'll bring RC Cars which is a hoot  :)

Any thoughts on the need for a pre-LAN ftp server? Where do we submit games, hacks and patches for testing etc?

I suspect we can organise that.  Let's figure out which games first and then set it up.  One of things that struck me was that I think we had too many games at the last LAN.  I think we need to focus a bit more.

CS
COD
UT2k4
BF1942/Vietnam

That would be enough for the weekend on its own!

I think there are several/many attendies expecting to play UT2003/2004, Halo and a racing game?

However much we try to anticipate or control the games being played we have to expect that some people will not want to play some games.
Also we cant have a 20 vs 20 on most games so the people that want to play a game of CS, Ut2003, LFS and any other will do that.
There was a nice balance of "right we are playing this game at this time please attend anything other than these times play a game you want" at the last LAN lets not try to ruin that balance.

I agree we had it about right last time.

So my definative list goes like this:

Counter-Strike
Obviously

Team based with vehicles.
Halo, This was avery popular game last time and almost stole the LAN from CS. I think almost everyone had fun playing it at some point during the LAN. It's very easy to jump right in and plays well regardless of how experienced a player is. That being said it is a bit graphics heavy and therefore one or two people struggled to play it. COD might work as an alternative although I have never played the multiplayer.

Deathmatch
UT2004 Although Halo has death match maps, UT 2003- 'death match' has better ones. The football mod was also very popular. Moving up to 2004 would add some variety.

Large scale multiplayer/multi role
Battefield Vietnam. A move on from 1942/Desert Strike mod. So there is again some variation from last time. An attempt to get a big map going (i.e. 15-20 a side) would be a challenge.

Racing Game Need for Speed. Arguably better than LFS (especially since the control changes in LFS). Lots of cars and tracks, drag racing mode, skid pan etc. Also makes you think you're Vin Deisel out of Fast and Furious  :)

So that's my definative list and I'll now just go with the flow. I'd humbly argue that whatever choices we make, we try to pick something that covers each game type mentioned above.

That's me done  :)

Dr Sadako

As I understand it UT2004 has vehicles and have "stole" some ideas from Halo. I think we should try out what is available. If UT2004 sucks we go with Halo.

As BF Vietnam, UT2004 and CS-CZ should be out before the LAN I think we will see them at the LAN anyways.
