Motherboards?

Ok i have a dell motherboard with rambus ram but as this is useless to me as i can't upgrade the ram for anything less than £250 for 256mb ram i have decided to get a new motherboard! i have at present  

The computer has been shipped with 2.0GHZ Pentium 4 processor
installed in the computer with 400FSB.

And it is a 423 pins Pentium 4 processor .

I would be grateful if you could tell me a motherboard than can be overclocked and is no rambus and takes ddr400! Also i have no real buget but hope it will be backwards compatible with a higher chip so i can slip in a new one later on! any ideas?

If not i will have to buy a new processor and want it to be high end! shall i get prescott or normal processors? Plus i was looking at this motherbboard what is it compatible with?

If you can wait a wee while then my 2 cents would recommend waiting 6 months - I know this is hard, but it is the decision  I have reached for my own systems.  There are new mobos, new sockets, new buses etc coming out over the next few motnhs, leave it a while and upgrade just after christmas.

Not really.  Playing those games with all the bells and whistles on needs a *real* fast CPU as this is the current bottleneck, which means a new platform.  Play them at lower res for now and enjoy them again when the new platforms come down into reasonable price range.

Ok rite so bearing in mind my chipset any ideas of mb that r backwards compatible with this chip and with new p4 3.0ghz 800fsb and above chips?

ghost present P4's are 478 pin so ur cpu wont fit any of the latest boards(I did here of a converter,but imo steer clear).I agree with TL,just hangfire for a bit

Never realised you were talking that old GhostMjr.  Suggest you reconsider and buy a new cpu and mobo together.  Maybe even make the jump to the cheaper amd range to help the cost?  You'll be dumping the RDRAM anyway so it makes sense to consider a brand change too?

An AMD XP3200+ is about the same price as Intel's Prescott or Northwood 2.8GHz cpu, so you could decide which to switch to.  Otherwise I'd sit tight, live with the 2Gig dinosaur for a few months and you'll get a *much* better system at the end of the year.  Tbh the games you mentioned are still going to struggle with a good gfx card because the CPU is the bottleneck, so you may as well get the biggest baddest cpu upgrade you can find to go with your system.

Christ stop whinging, Farcry ran no bother on mine. one of TL recommended Athlons running hot at 2 ghz.

Pron runs fine.

2Ghz. A dinosaur!? bah! I've only had my 2GHz cpu (xp2400+) for a few months :blink: no fair!
