I'm trying to test if offline mode will work for me - and I'm failing miserably.

I start steam with bband on - then I shut steam down
Then I pull my bband cable out from the wall
Then I start steam - and it just hangs as though it's perpetually looking for an update (that it will never find as I'm disconnected)?!?

Let if for 5 minutes and no joy

The check box is not ticked on settings (so it should remember me), and I don't have to input my email when starting steam, so I think I've followed previous instructions.

Ideas?
If I wanted you to understand I would have explained it better

Zok

I think you have to log off steam aswell as shutting it down, there should be an option in the menu somewhere.

ChimpBoy

No mate - they removed the log-off bit from the menu a while back

Do you write user manuals for Japanese appliances?

Rigtht click the steam icon in the system tray, click exit.

Disconnect your broadband. You might want to try disabling the nic or something. Maybe it still sees the modem and thinks it can connect (i don't know about this sort of stuff)

Restart steam, it should try to connect but then give u a failed to connect error and an option to retry or play offline.

that any good?

I think that might be it (I'll test tonight).

Maybe it's because I'm on a wireless network at home (Smilo said that might be it when I called him to talk it through - and he's always right :) ) and because my comp is still on the network it is trying to go through that.  There should be enough geeks at this lan thing to sort it ;)

I've bough along a pack of cards and a few good books. So if it all goes wrong at least you won't get bored.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.
