Knowing Microsofts track record for .........err ..........everything, would adhering to the old adage "If it ain't broke......." be in order?

I'm still using DirectX 7.  Installing 8 broke half of the progs on my PC, and in the end all I could do was a long and painful manual uninstall.

DX9 should work if you have new stuff, I guess.

I created a restore point (XP Pro) and installed DX9 with no issues so far.

Any advantages to be had from upgrading from DX8 to DX9?

Considering none of my hardware can do any DX9 wizardry..

Probably not. Very few cards (about 4 from ATI and the upcoming Nvidia FX - which will be awesome) support it.

I absolutely refuse to buy another bloody graphics card until my frame rates drop below a gazillion. No matter how sexy they make it sound.
