I got as far as Route Kanal!!!  :D
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

It stunk like a big stinky thing. No idea what all the hype was about. Great physics engine ruined by a souless empty game. Far Cry was far far better.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Hippy

I finished it.

The end was such an anti climax.

Frustrating.

hl2 plays like a graphics demo for me, all show with not much go. Try adding a storyline or playabiltiy or freedom of movement or someting next time valve....... the dev team should play farcry thru a few times to see what sort of game they should have produced.

Finished it - my verdict:

As a demonstration of a revolutionary game engine it's incredible. As a game, requiring story level, a plot and some immersion - after the first level when I genuinely felt immersed and a bit scared of these crazy people running around with riot sticks and shooting at me - it fails horribly.

Take a good game engine, good graphics and good physics. Tack on poor linear level design, horrendous badly explained story line with almost no continuity between HL and HL2, make the last level really fun but amazingly easy and untaxing, with a cop out of an ending - again with no explanation and you have HL2.

The first level promised so much - a genuinely edgy 1984 style game, but it simply did not deliver.

Poor, definitely glad I only paid £15.

I tried that but the soldiers very quickly caught on and simply lobbed a few grenades into the cell.

I also tried setting up barriers around the sentry guns of barrels (boxes break after a few bullets) and that almost worked but keeping the guns upright was hard work!

I eventually settled for climbing up onto a walkway via a few carefully stcked crates etc, setting the sentry guns up at it's edge as I went and then sat up there lobbing grenades at the soldiers. They did a good job of lobbing grenades at themselves too, but occasionally I'd have to rush to pick up a live gren to throw back down...

If you take a sentry gun with you from the previous bit, this makes it a doddle....

Overall I enjoyed it, the first few levels were interesting and actualy grabbed my attention.

But found it to be far too short (6 hours!  :pinch: ), lacking storyline and feeling completely unlinked from the events in the first game

Though also horribly disappointed (mostly because the game wanted to reinvent itself in each section - I'm a boat/zombie/buggy/antlion-hating/antlion-loving/squad-based/overpowered-gun kind of a game), I do still enjoy playing some sections of it every now and then still - that in my mind is the main reason to complete it - so you can just start at a specific level. Nova Prospekt is great fun, as is Ravenholm. The squad-based sections would be fun too if the AI wasn't so piss-poor. However, that stupid stuttering issue is hugely annoying, as are the ridiculous load times.

Whichever one of you said Far Cry was more worthwhile hit the nail on the head - FC is far and away the best SP shooter released for a couple of years. I don't understand why so many people seem to dislike it.

I got bored with it. I stopped playing at a point that sounds similar to the one you are at or near. It was with the buggy - I winched the buggy up onto the docks, killed the baddies and then started to move up and inland only to be repeatedly killed by some lethal helicopter every time I raced to jump the broken bridge.

If someone provides me with the infromation I need to advance further then I may even pick it up again...............otherwise it will remain unfinished. And it will still bore me...... :(

Hi TL, you gotta kill the helo to go past the bridge...back up a lil bit to the car wreck, you will find the surface to air missiles there behind a car, missed this meself first time round, takes about 4/5 missiles to pop the chopper..

Personally, I enjoyed the game, played at hardest, but wouldnt play again if you know what I mean

It started off well with some creeping about but after 30 minutes of trying to be creepy and quiet I got bored and took the other option... I got as far as a really big ship of the coast without really understanding what was going on anymore (kind of raced through several encampments on the beaches and stuff, probably overshot something important) got bored and haven't played it since though no doubt I will pick it up again if I ever get bored of BF2 or fancy playing a SP game again (MP is so much better) although I've not played HL2 for a good 6 months now...

Maybe you should have paid attention at the start of the level, when that Doyle chap tells you you're heading off to a really big ship off the coast ;)

You're off to that carrier to try to find that Val b**t.

---

As far as SP vs MP goes, I'm pretty much all SP lately as I'm never online when you lot are, BF2 is laggy as hell when you're playing with an ocean between you and the server, and I can't find any worthwhile US servers. :(

so I was fine to just race through all the encampments in a jeep, take out everyone that followed me in a furious jeeps on the beach battle-race, kill everyone on the boat I could see from a distance (got to love the mounted mg on the jeep...) ... but then get tired and go to bed ... :) Would there have been any point in stopping in the encampments for inventory or anything?

Maus - if it's a decent Stateside server you're after, IMHO you could do no better than the Tactical Gamer ones.   The IP addresses, server rules, etc are all here.  Server times are EST, which shouldn't be all that bad for you.

I've been on there a couple of times now, after -=[dMw]=- have closed up shop for the night, and had a lot of fun.  Full 64 player maps that, even with my 150 ping to the US, are quite playable.

No point at all, unless you wanna kill every single bad dude there is.
