Basically, with no way of playing multiplayer, I want a really decent FPS single player but with loads of replay value.

And something that isn't the standard alien invasion/undead zombies etc MY favourite recent fps was the first few levels of FarCry when you're fighting the mercenaries. Anything along those lines, i.e. a bit of a thinking FPS, would be good. I also really enjoyed Battlefield 2, Deus Ex and Project IGI. Any suggestions, or shall I just wait until the Godfather computer game is released?

EDIT: There's no rush, I won't be buying it for a while as still in the thralls and lack of money of freshers fortnight

I was going to suggest Deus X but looks like you've already played it. Haven't seen anything else catch my eye yet im afraid. Half life source was supposed to be my next play and play and play game but it sucked.

What was the verdict on Deus Ex 2? Worthwhile addition or just a graphical update?

I cant remember which one it was i got. The story line involved a helicopter a lot? either way it was worth it. If your at the lan i'll bring it along.

Have you tried "Vietcong" or "Vietcong: Purple Haze" (which includes the "Fist Alpha" expansion pack)?

New graphics, new menu system, new bio mods, new story line, but imho sucked the big one.  :(

Hold up and wait for F.E.A.R. The demo was a bit generic, but from the previews it looks like it'll be a fun and sort of thinking-y shooter. Release date is set for 18th Oct in the US, no idea of the UK date (actually, I just looked it up and it's 21st Oct).

In the meantime, about the only other fairly recent "thinking" FPS game that comes to mind is Raven Shield, but that's not strictly speaking a FPS, nor is it especially recent. Hmm, I guess SWAT 4 is more recent, and worth a look too.

The hardest FPS I ever played was Chrome which I think you can get pretty cheaply nowadays. If you want longevity then thats your boy IMHO

Deus X 2 was crap.

FPS's with 'monsters' are crap, FPS's set in WW2 are crap.

I can only say keep playing FarCry with the mercs, until it gets to the obligatory 'We've run out of ides, lets bring in the genetically modified monsters and add a few dark bits' bit.

I'd dearly love someone to correct me.

Agreed, although i played the x-box version so i dunno if it was different.

The multi-ending was a con. What you did through the game didnt matter as you could still choose which side to go right at the end.

A Twig

Hmm, so at the mo it's looking like I should go for Chrome then. Was Operation Flashpoint any good as a single player game?

Yeah, OFP was good. maybe a little bit dated graphically but the gameplay was good and some of the levels were pretty hard.

A Twig

COD 2's meant to be good when it comes out?
Oh and I've seen really mixed reviews on Chrome BB, so really not sure....

I reckon that hunter game - the one set around chernobyl or something, looks like it'll be a good 'un.
