This is a play we actually aready use - and it's worked well.

Basically what happens is this:

When you take a flag you get someone (or a couple of people if your team is big enough) to volunteer to be 'defence players'.

The defence player/s then HOLD the current flag while the 'Assault team' (of the remaining players) move on to take the next flag.

And once you take that flag - the defence team moves up, and you start the whole process again on the next flag

It's that simple - and, as I say, we already use this (I usually volunteer to be the defence player!).

ADVANTAGES:

Well, obviously the big advantage to this formation is that you can move on safe in the knowledge that your rear is protected (!) and there is less chance that the enemy will nip behind your advance and cap your last flag while you are busy trying to take the next one.

Especially useful when the enemy tries a 'chopper hop' - one man with a ATW can easily 'discourage' a sneaky chopper hop attempt! :)

DISADVANTAGES:

Well, you have to split your team. It means you have less players to assault, so if the enemy all stick together your assault team will always be outnumbered.

It makes it harder for the assault team to crack a well defended flag.

Also, your defence team will only number one or two men (usually just one in a squad sized team). This means it will be easily overwhelmed by a concerted 'rush' by the enemy.

But, it's better than having NO defence at your last flag.

------------------------------------

Variation: 'Leap Frog'

The defence and assault sections take it in turn to take the next flag.

Once the assault section has taken the enemy flag they then become the defence section for that flag - the previous defence section move passed that flag and assault the next flag, and so on and so forth.

This variation works better on teams with multiple squads, as the defence team needs to be big enough to be a viable assault squad. No use in just single squad sized games! :)

Any comments, suggestions or reports on whether this formation has worked/not worked for you?

After having played AAS some more, I must say that roll and hold is the best.

I did that on our server yesterday when it was full of other players. Me mono and some other guy kept defense behind the attacking squads. As soon as a flag was capped, we moved up, and when a flag was lost, we fell back. Not the most fun, but still quite a lot of action.

I've found that roll and hold is good with small nnumbers of players and leapfrog is better with more players.
