I'm guessing you have a Maxtor hard drive?

I which case I fear it is about to die a nasty death. Get a new one and try to dump as much across before it goes belly up for good.

Try going here for a utility that will check for real
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads...ds/powermax.htm

Back up what you can, if you can before you use it though.

The smart feature is simply reporting that there are big errors on your hard drive. It might last a day or a month but I'm fairly certain it's on it's way out.

That being said you might want to get some other opinions check the web or google to make sure I'm not talking rubbish.

Sorry mate

How big is your drive? I have a spare 13 Gb drive I can send if it can take the data from your old drive (use drive image or drive copy to move data across)

sheepy

will a complete format help. this i have had 2 format at both of the last 2 lans i have been 2

no, a format will not help. If your drive's smart is coming back with a failure, replace, then the problem is terminal. Get that data off there quick and replace asap. I'd even go so far as to suggest you don't use the computer (or unplug that HDD) until you get a new one.

Then install the new drive, stick the os onto that and then plug the failing one as a slave and drag all of those files across.

Its not worth mirroring as you don't know whats being corrupted and you may end up having a bad install of your os being mirrored to your new drive. A re-install is the only way to go.

....that'll be the annus horriblis again  :?  And after a month like Sheepeh's had, you need a new family motto, something like this one:

Carpe mundus scidae.........  8O

TL.  8)
TL.
Wisdom doesn\'t necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself.  (Tom Wilson)
Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. (Michael Jordan)

it translates roughly as:

There is a slippy carp underneath us

smilodon

No idea what TL's motto means but annus horribilis means horrible year. It's a quote from the queen no less, when she was describing a year in which her children were being particularly crap and moronic (that's inbreeding for ya).

As a small note of consolation a lot of hard drive/bios setups either don't use SMART or don't have it switched on. Those people don't get the warning you got....their hard drive just dies and they loose everything with no chance of a backup.

So there is a very small consolation  :?

I've been thinking. (Yes, it did hurt... lots) and are you sure you havn't been struck by lightning? Or perhaps you upset a fairground fortune teller?

Still look on the bright side, bad luck comes in threes and by your list...

job quit,
car crashed,
HD bust.

that makes three! So good times ahead! Yay!!  :D
