:ranting:

1-2% of CPU? Shoddily written, undisclosed, system-affecting software with no means provided for removal. Hmmm. I wonder if the other record labels have similar stuff!

Now, what was that about rootkits again?

  It scares me when i think of the labels that sony own, colombia bmg epic etc then the minor labels ran by these companys like illustrious records (owned by epic) deconstruction < well known for dance music (or it used to be wen i was a lad) owned by bmg    It go's on and on! It must be like pyramid stealth installations. I will feel safer with limewire than a bought cd.

Ways round it...
MacOSX
Linux
(do not do this next one though ;) ) Bittorrent (remember that as someone commented under that blog "buying the cd then downloading the tracks off p2p/bittorrent" still technically illegal so don't do it)

DRM on individual legal music downloads/purchases would appear to be a better option, so I guess buying mp3s is the way of the future - only with you could access the uncompressed music when buying online...

I just rip them straight to MP3 before I even play them on a regular CD player, generally. It's much more convenient to have all my music sitting on my HD anyway, really.

:withstupid:

Perhaps if they started to release CDs with a PC-readable folder containing pre-ripped mp3 files. That way the record label can put DRM tags onto the mp3 files, and the artists/labels can provide music with a pre-defined quality setting depending on disc-space available. Save us the hassle of ripping to mp3, support the digital movement which is getting big, avoid OS platform issues (hopefully)...

I read elsewhere (bbc, the register) that what sont/xpc have releeased is a kit to uncloak the rootkit/DRMsoftware, but that to remove it you still have to contact them for help. As the register's article says "And with this level of apathy, the music giants will be emboldened to try these techniques again. And again. And again."
