Ranger, paddy and I have just ordered CIV 4 and GT Legends. I quite liked Civ3 but it did get a bit dull after a while, I'm hoping this will be better.

Anyone else already got it? We ordered it from play.com for £18 along with GT Legends for £18. Should arrive this week.

I'm really looking forward to getting CIV IV, but know that there are gonna be a few late nights/early morning game sessions ahead!

:)

...I was also looking at 'Age of Empires III' though. But that was quite a bit more expensive - which is what tipped the ballance in favour of CIV IV for me.

It will be interesting to see how the multiplayer system works in the new CIV, though I can't see us playing this at the next LAN (maybe if we had a week instead of a weekend eh?)...LOL

One thing I always hoped they would have (but don't yet) in CIV would be the ability to zoom in an micro-manage the battles. SO instead of seeing a couple of 'characters' battling it out, you could opt to click on a full screen battle mode and see something more akin to an 'Age of Empires III' battle (if you wanted to).

Well...My CIV IV arrived on my desk this morning - so I will be able to have a go and see what's what tonight.

...I'll report back tomorrow!

Had my first go last night...

Can't help feeling they are trying to broaden thier audience by 'dumbing down' some of the more complexities of the game...

There seem to be a lot more 'automatic' options for units - just click your workers on automatic and they will happily troll round improving things as they se fit - leaving you to concentrate on building the cool stuff and fighting!

:)

The zoom feature is nice - zooming from a more strategic 'top down' map right into a close up isometric view of units.

At this magnification the units look a lot more like the units in 'Age of Empires' - and they are a bit more exciting during battles thanks to new animations.

(I still think you should have the ability to click on a battle and have the choice to see and direct a full-blown battle with multiple units in a new 'battle window'. Maybe in CIV V?)

Everything else is just CIV - which is basically a fantastic game.

One thing I do like is the ability to promte units to give them extra special fighting abilities (extra defence power - or better at fighting in mountains or jungles, etc).

I have yet to play a multiplayer game - but I notice that Tactical Gamer will be running a 1 v 1 ladder...I may be tempted.
