Ranger

(Inspired by Benny and me bickering over 'Full Metal Jacket! LOL)

...Criteria: This is about pure entertainment (not arty stuff):

1] 'Zulu' (sorry, but it is coming up to Christmas! LOL)

2] 'The Longest Day' - fav. bit is Richard Burton as the downed RAF pilot!

3] 'Platoon'

4] 'We Were Soldiers' - LOL, guff - but enjoyable guff!

5] 'Glory' - Just fantastic! Brilliant! Terrific!

6 & 7] 'Go Tell the Spartans' & 'The Quiet American' (1958) - want to know more about teh Vietnam war than 'Hamburger Hill' tells you? Watch these!

8] 'The Young Lions'

9] 'Das Boot'

10] 'Cross of Iron'

Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers (it is based on a true life event - I'm reading the book at the moment)
The Longest Day
Ice Cold in Alex
12 O'Clock High
Beach Red (only ever seen this once but a very under-rated film)
The Great Escape
Battle of Britain
Enemy at the Gates
To Hell and Back (the story of Audie Murphy)

Strange but I can't think of a single good movie about the First World War.

Benny

Can we include sub stuff?

Run Silent Run Deep was great. Loved that.

You know - I took 'Ice Cold in Alex' out of my list at the last moment! :)

I was also going to put that Noel Coward one in - er, 'In Which We Serve'???

The Battle of Britain is enjoyable - but I think I left it out because I liked 'The Longest Day' a bit better. I've just finished listening to a great audio book on the top aces of WWII - fantastic. I think it was James E. "Johnny" Johnson (38 kills) was my favourite 'story' - the amazing tale of how he shot down a German fighter while flying UPSIDEDOWN!

'Great Escape' - LOL ~ another Chistmas film! (In fact - there's another thread there - Top 10 Christmas Films, do you dare me! Hee hee!)

Oooh forgot about that. yup that was a goodie :D

BigFatCat

And I'll chuck in The Yangste Incident too. Notable medal recipient was Simon, who, though injured, continued to "man" his station protecting the ships stores from rodent incursion.

Shame on you all for not having Thin Red Line in there. Also, shame on some of you for having Saving Private Ryan in there, too.

Thin Red Line
Battle Of Britain
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Cross of Iron
Longest Day
Glory

... and now I've run out. There's a cracking Normandy-set B&W one but I can't for the life of me remember its name.
