I am wondering is it possible to purchase Battlefield 2 second hand without having CD key issues? Is the CD key associated with a player account?

Probably not and yes.

Do yourself a favour and spend the extra for a sealed box.

It's really not worth the risk, its not as risky as steam, but there are people out there who have installed the no-dvd patch and probably think they can make a bit of money selling the disks onward.
