I was folding for some time, but by some strange reason the program didn't seem to work too great on my laptop.  It used much more resources than it was supposed to do, leading to both overheating and lag when I was using other programs... :(

QuoteWill F@H make my PC run more slowly?
No it will not. When your computer would otherwise be idle, the software grabs the surplus cpu cycles for the benefit of this research and processes some of the data. When your computer needs to do some work for you the F@H program immediately stops. The chances are that you you use only 10% of the processing power that is provided by your Pentium or Athlon powered computer. This means that 90% of the time that your PC is powered up your processor is doing absolutely nothing. By running the Folding@Home software on your PC you can effectively use 100% of the processors capability as it only uses computing cycles that are unused. You should not even notice that it is running. For example, you could run F@H and play CS simultaneously - you should not notice any difference in the speed of your machine! If you want to make absolutely sure, then just adjust the option to limit the processor useage to 90%, thus always leaving 10% in reserve.

so... i have been reading true this post a pretty fast and not really gone in to detail just yet, have to go to school soon, but can anyone here say that this program causes more lag then you normaly have at your computer?

i have a pretty good computer if i say so myself, so it might as well be used for "the greater good" when im not really using it all but i dont really want to play with a lot of lag to do do a microspopic bit of work for medical science

i dont have any lag whatsoever when runnig.. the program is designed to run at the lowest possible priority and pauses when you load for an example WoW.. and if you tab out and look at taskmanager you can see this..
and if you have problems with it still taking resources you can just pause it manually :)

Ditto here, zero lag.  Tbh I have set some of my PCs to run at 100% max with F@H and I have also set some to run at 90% max (thus leaving a 10% buffer Just-In-Case™ and I have noticed any difference between them.

OTOH there are clearly some people who do have problems, but I am not convinced it is due to F@H, I reckon it is more to do with their specific software and system setup.  F@H runs as @lowest priority' on the CPU, so it shoud not affect *anything* at all.

The only thing that F@H does do is increase the temperature of your CPU as it is working at 100% all the time.  Some say that this causes your CPU to burn out early, but again i hav enever had this problem.  For the last 2 years I have had an Athlon XP1700 overclocked to 2.4GHz and runnign F@H at 100%.  The PC stays on 24/7, 365 days per year and is still going strong with no failures.  As 2 years is longer than most people hang on to their PC components anyhow I'd argue that it does no harm to yoru hardware at all.  Even on my heavily overclocked XP1700 rig, the temps for the CPU never go above about 50-55 AFAIAA and that's on a hot summer day!

I do have to say that I find it a bit strange that I did have some problems running the folding program.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 with 2.13 GHz pentium centrino and 2GB ram, so I really shouldn't have any problems.  I even tried to set F@H to fold at lower than 100% available CPU when running, but still I experienced lag and heating problems...

But that said, I really didn't put too much effort into finding out what the problem was.  If I get some spare time I might try to install it again and give it another try :)
