I'm pretty shure that I completely zapped the disk before sending. I don't think there was even a partition on it. If you are running XP then:

1. right click on "my computer" and select "manage".
2. select "disk management" under the "storage" option.
3. right click on the new disk. I believe the option you need is "create partition" (i can't see create at the moment as I do not have an unpartitioned disk but I can see "delete partition" so i assume that changes to create on a blank disk)
4. Right click on new partition and select format (if you get offered the option of quick format then take it).
5. If you want to make the new disk bootable you will have to set the partition to "active" (another right click I believe)

There ya go slurpy.......

although as you are going to be installing Xp onto that drive I'm not sure what would happen if you tried to do it with the old drive still connected and running it's own XP? Two XP's?

I'm sure bigger brains that me will set you right though.

So partition away  :D

the unallocated disk (the one I sent you) needs to be partitioned and formatted. Do that then it should appear as a valid data drive. If you can get hold of a copy of drive image or drive copy then it is much eaiser to copy the contents of your exisiting disk to the new one.

sheepy

thanx its now formatting.

May I suggest the most excellent book "The dummies guide to windows", not to be mistaken with "The brummies guide to widows".

And if thats a bit too 'stiff' for ya, then try "The thick bast&*£s guide to windows".  It was written by someone who failed their cooking GCSE.

Isn't that the official training guide for employees of PC World?

I've managed to get a copy of the literature list for the PC World Staff Induction Course and you're right, it's not on it.

What is on it though, is........

"Extended Warrantees" - How to sell a three year warrantee on a product which costs more than the product itself.

"It's a virus, you'll need a new PC"- Problem solving techniques.

"Can I help you Sir?"- How to pester a customer who is just browsing, and then magically disappear on your tea break when they actually want some advice.

"Mein Kampf"- Training manual for PC World Security Staff.

"Indifference Techniques"- How to run a customer service counter.

"Nothing from the neck up"- Technical Training Manual.

"Run and hide"- A guide to your first day on the job.

"The land that time forgot"- Running your own till.

The list goes on

Blueball's idea of copying the whole disk across is better than mine.

But I have a slightly better haircut

Another option would be to use the clone facility of Norton Ghost. You can clone a disk or partition to anther disk or partition.
