I agree with Bob's first points about knowing your class etc. but not sure if aleveling a char automatically means u know how to play it. (I have a level60 pala that doesnt know where the "Heal" button is...) Jk

A Paladins primary thing is: Healing and cleansing for lvl 55+ instances. When you are only lvl 40ish a pally is like a druid, a little bit of everything. The kind of character that you want to be as a pally and druid btw depends greatly on your choice of talents. Because if you spec in retribution, you will miss out on many great benefits for a Holy pally that heals and stuff. However you can do medium dps. Beside your talent spec, it depends also the gear you are wearing. If your wearing alot of mana and +healing gear, it is obvious that you also need a Holy spec for your paladin. However are you wearing alot of +str +agility/stamina gear with +AP and crit you need a retribution spec. the same if you want to be a tank/holy paladin you need alot of the gear that warrior needs just with intelect on it also.
