A though before bedtime.

Was playing Rio this afternoon as a CT and we were kicking bottom (mainly as Sadako and Albert were on my team). In fact I was playing total rubbish (0-5 I think). As we were winning easily Sadako naturally asked a CT to swap to T. I volunteered and changed sides.
The T's joy at getting an additional player were short lived though as my appauling play as a CT changed not one jot when I became a T.  My total lack off effect as a T meant that we still got horribly beaten up.

So finally to the point. Wouldn't it be a better idea for the top player to swap sides. When a team balance is called the player at the top of the scores page jumps across. This would have a more dramatic effect by depriving one team of their best player and giving him to the weaker side.

Just a thought

Last night on Rio was terrible I must say. Ppl joined and dropped at a very high rate. :( I started out as CT on that map, joined T to balance a few rounds later joined back to CT again to balance and very soon after that a few Ts dropped. I didn't feel like changing teams one more time and that is why I asked if any one volunteered. Thanks for doing that Smilodon.

I still like the conversation we had after I killed you just after you switched.

Sm: How did you know I was there?
Sad: I saw u

It's a fair point you make Smilo and one that the Admins try to take into account when switching people about - that's why you'll sometimes see or hear a requestf or specific person to switch sides.  TBH though, most of the time a simple one person switch works as it tends to have smaller and more acceptable incremental chnages in the team balance.  The danger in switching the top player is that you can change the balance too much!

So in summary, we do both!

I think if one team are getting whipped, the top player in the winning team should put his (or her) prrrrreecccccccciooooouussssss mighty fragging high score to the back of their mind and hit M on the keyboard.

More evenly scored games required a little more subtlety that my limited intelligence cannot begin to imagine, so I'll not comment.  :P

None of this wait until I die malarky as you will either not die (since you are the top player and are probably surviving most rounds anyway) or you'll forget. There's no stats so no real reason for not swapping.

One question this does pose, at what score/point/instance should a player swap..... 2 - 0.... 3 - 0 ...... 6 - 0..... 8 - 0 ????? I've heard a few calls for swapping when the teams are evenly balanced for a certain map at 2 - 0 ! I see no point in this. Perhaps wait until 4 - 0 and decide. It may be PCS but it's all too easy to call for more players too soon. Wait and adjust tactics to try and win the round e.g. if you are defending, camp more ! Hide ! don't confront head on ! Or if you are attacking, take it slower, pick 'em off, cause diversions etc....

Most times I find that a team may go 4 or 5 rouds in the lead but the other team soon whittle the lead down.
Cheers, Bert

I know it's a tough one to call.

On the point Albert raised there is the arguement that maybe team balancing isn't always neccessary. Many times I've seen a team who are getting whipped start to use voice comms more and set up some tactical play. Suddenly with a little leadership, a little organisation and some thought as to why they are loosing every round, the team often turn it around and end up winning the map. Those are the games that I really cherish cause I know we've done well not because we got extra players but because we got our sh*t together.

Balanced PCS play should always be the goal, and team balancing is obviously a powerful tool to that end.

But in some situations is it wrong for a team to decline the extra players and try to get back into the game on their own?

I see it happen often enough on the dMw servers so I assume not

Cant u get a team balancing program on the server?
Ive seen them on many servers ive been on but not sure how good they really are?

I think the problem with the team balancing progs is that they force it on you whethere you want it or not. On some maps you need to have the bias to make them pcs playable but a lot of the team balancing software won't allow this. There may be ones out there that are more configurable but I haven't come accross them.

Yeah, they use a thing called PTB which does "balance" teams and switches players to try to create equal squads but quite often all it takes is, for instance a lone, hot player like Albert to be pitted against 3-5 opponents who might not be playing so well.  As Sadako said, in thoery it works but sometimes forces very unbalanced teams.  I think the honor system works much better as everyone here seems to be good friends and agreeable to making a switch once in a while.

JB

I think he fancies you Albert.
