There's no point in bookmarking anthing because I have to log in - manually - every TANGOing time.  Allow me to expand, ranting-stylee:

When I do log in I sit and look at the non-functioning redirect for a bit until it's time to click on a link that takes me out of the forum to the deadmen site just so I can click on the forum link to finally get to where I wanted to go in the first place - where previously I just used one click on one bookmark in the old forum.

I've tried it using FF with no issues. I've checked your account and found nothing different to any other Charlie member.

Sounds like client-side probs to me. Got any local DNS gizmos running? Hosts file etc.

Tell you what DM

Why don't you just go sort it yourself - you seem to have everything covered!

I'm outta here, see you all in a few weeks!

TeaLeaf

DM I have checked the web forward and there does not appear to be anything wrong with it, I have checked it from several locations.  I'm really not sure what else to suggest :(   I use FF from home and work and all works well.

BB, the web forwarding may be the pointing of
forum.deadmen.co.uk > //www.deadmen.co.uk/forum

Doggers, I'm real sorry you've got problems, but ranting at us when the problem does not appear to be one at our end is not very productive.  I fyou would liek to suggest what might be wrong with the url forwarding then please do say so, I have checked it, BB and OB have checked it, it seems to work for us.

Have you perchance got something written in your host file pointing it to the wrong place?

No, that would be the "I'm sick of you throwing your toys out of the cot and ranting at people" attitude!

DogMeat

Quote from: BlueBallNo, that would be the "I'm sick of you throwing your toys out of the cot and ranting at people" attitude!

It's not a rant at people per se, just crap software I'm ranting about.  For instance I'm writing this on a brand new, pristine Linux installation.  I went straight to the forum, logged in, told it to remember me (the redirect worked this time) looked at a thread, logged out and closed the browser.

With me so far? Good.

I opened the browser and went to the dMw forum - guess what?  No details remembered.  Nothing to do with cookies, DNS caches, sunspots or the price of cheese in Ipswich.  That leaves the browser or the forum software.  FF worked fine on the old forum, it still works fine on other forums doing as its told and remembering login details on every PC I use it on.

The only place it doesn't work is this forum.

AFAIK, no-one was asked about changing the forum, nor was anyone asked to do any testing before it was implemented, just wham-bam there you go, like it or lump it.  OK, that's your privilege as admins, but if it causes problems the attitude shouldn't be "sort it out yourself".

Still, If that is the attitude, that allow me to respond in the same forthright manner by inviting you to shove your forum at least as far as your colon.

Doggers,

Off Topic:
Much as it dissappoints me to say so, your attitude is unacceptable.  Please remember the standards you are meant to adhere too.  As co-founder of dMw you helped set the standards originally.

Back on topic:
Re the url forwarding.  I'm glad you find this to be working for you now.

Re testing, yes things were tested, so you stand corrected.  We didn't just jump in blind - a considerable amount of time went into testing before we did the live migration.  More changes to style, content are due shortly, the changes to be rolled out are made possible by the software we now use.

Re being asked about the changes.  Yes people were asked about the changes: the relevant people discussed it as part of the overall plans for the community.  This does not mean all members were consulted about any changes, the decisions were taken by the Admins responsbile for running the community, much as you took decisions when you ran the clan.  You better than most know that these are not decisions we just jump into, but are well thought through and carefully considered.

Re the cookies.  Every now and then I lose cookies on a site whether or not it is this site or some other and irrespective of whether I am using IE or FF.  This site seems to work for me and the vast majority of other members, many of whom use FF.  I am not saying there is not a problem, but it appears that if there is one it is an unusual one.  I will therefore, on your behalf, spend some of my time at home today researching this to see if this is a known problem and if there is a solution.

I hope this explains things better for you.

This is odd..

Firefox -> trying forum.deadmne.co.uk

I get the following error.

QuoteERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/
 The following error was encountered:
  • Zero Sized Reply
Squid did not receive any data for this request.
Your cache administrator is support@cspencerltd.co.uk.

  Generated Fri, 21 Jul 2006 13:43:45 GMT by proxy.cslnet (squid/2.5.STABLE1)
Now I try www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/

Works fine. Try forum.deadmen.co.uk and it produces same error.

Now i goto IE and again try forum.deadmen.co.uk.. works fine.

Back to firefox and try forum.deadmen.co.uk and guess what... it works again.

Conclusion.

None, I can reach the forums, I haven't had any problems with login in, cache, read/unread posts. Just this wierd Firefox problem of spacking out, then working again after trying IE.

EDIT:

bit of digging around squid and I find this

http://www1.it.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ.pdf

Quote11.51 Why do I sometimes get Zero Sized Reply?
This happens when Squid makes a TCP connection to an origin server, but for some reason, the connection
is closed before Squid reads any data. Depending on various factors, Squid may be able to retry the request
again. If you see the Zero Sized Reply error message, it means that Squid was unable to retry, or that all
retry attempts also failed.
What causes a connection to close prematurely? It could be a number of things, including:
1. An overloaded origin server.
2. TCP implementation/interoperability bugs. See the 14 (System-Dependent Weirdnesses) section for
details.
3. Race conditions with HTTP persistent connections.
4. Buggy or miscongured NAT boxes, rewalls, and load-balancers.
5. Denial of service attacks.
6. Utilizing 14.2.7 (TCP blackholing on FreeBSD).

Doesn't help me much. It may just be how my work have configured squid, or the differences between fhow irefox and IE send headers, maybe after IE has worked it effects future calls to that webserver.

Anyway, thats me done.

TeaLeaf

...and that saved me a bit of typing because that's pretty much all I found too.  Thanks Jamoe.
