so, ime gonna upgrade, and thinking to swap my 6yr old 17" .26 dot pitch crt

1st of all, ime pretty much scared of tfts, mostly about contrast ratio, dead pixels etc. so ime looking for a quality monitor that will last, with good performance, and warranty
20" plus
widescreen
good contrast ratio *
8ms, or under - black to white  (if its grey to white, then multiply ms x2 to get black to white)
black frame colour is preferred, since all my system is black with a little bits of silver
NO speakers  (my gigaworks S750 is enough)
space is no problem (i have an 8person dining table for my pc)

* (ive heard it affects how the colours look, tbh tft colours look WierD on most of the tfts ive seen in my life, so thats been a major drawback for me)

that usually depends on whether the game supports widescreen res or not. more newer games do these days only really bf2 that is a pita to configure from my experience. bloody EA:eyebrow:

TBH i'm with Nef. For ages I staved off gettign a TFt cos I was worried about dead pixels, blurring during fast movement, bad black colour quality etc. I got a Viewsonic VP191s with my new PC, and was so impressed with the improvement voer what I thought was a high quality CRT that I bought a second one for dual head within 2 weeks.

Like you two I spent ages dithering about getting a TFT, plus I was a bit tight with cash for some time ;) I've got a viewsonic vx2025 and it suits me great! most games manage widescreen res, like I said the only one that causes real problems is BF2, although I think I got it going in widescreen. It doesn't really look stretched when I play (well, the hud is a bit perhaps but the game itself isnt...go figure) so I think it's working!
I wouldn't worry about speakers or not unless they make it look ugly. Mine has speakers ... somewhere. Don't use them though! Go for a good brand and a decent model from that brand and you should do okay. Viewsonic are rumoured to have the best pixel warranty. Dell are supposedly quite decent too, but I still don't trust them :)

Well the Viewsonic VP191s I have is only 19" not 20", and isn't widescreen, so I don't have screen stretching issues. At the time I had the choice of a really good all-rouder 19" screen, or a 20" that cost more and seemed a bit worse in some areas. Comparing my 19" with the 20" at work, the actual increase in screen real estate isn't worth it to me.

This is bearing in mind that even when I had a monitor capable of doing 1600x1200 I kept the Windows desktop, and thus all games I ran, at 1280x1024 max, cos I think 1600x1200 looks to small and I don't need the extra space (not with 2 monitors anyways). I wanted to be able to run games at the TFT's native res, and i'd rather run at 1280x1024 with antialiasing on than 1600x1200 with it off.
