Trojan, Virii and nefarious things

OK peeps, dMw LAN III is less than a month away and it is time for the infamous ritual sacrifice warning:

Anti-virus software is out there free - if you don't have any then go download it and use it. If your PC infects the other PCs at the LAN then just remember that the lynch party will outnumber you by about 30-1. Against such odds, not even lube will help you

If you don't believe that your machine could be infected, then remember that last year one of the attendees found 5 virii and 3 trojans on their system as a result of a pre-LAN system scan 8O

Do not bring an infected machine to the LAN. Last thing you should do on Friday night before taking your kit down for transport is to disconnect from the internet and then run a FULL system scan. That way you can walk into the LAN and be confident that it will not be YOU who will be facing the wrath of an angry mob.

So if you feel someone grab your collar...... :grab:

If anyone knows of any good AV programs please post em coz my not so genuine copy of PCcillin has stopped updating and im too stingy to buy it.

AVG, its free! and keeps itsself up to date.

I'm posting this link with some reservation as arguements about anti-virus software are rarely pleasant.

However although Grisoft AVG 6 may be free the results at Virus Bulletin suggest it may not be the best software around.

Virus Bulletin is the Industry Benchmark and about the most respected anti-virus tester there is, testing only real world "live" virii.

It might be worth a look ?

true. but some protection is better than no protection.

Personally I use trend. At home and at work. Yes, you have to pay, (just shelled out nearly two grand for work) but you only need one virus to trash your system to make it worth while.

Oh, and we get on average about 50-60 infected e-mails a week at work. More if there is a newly released one doing the rounds.

And trend fare ok in the test

here here, as AVG is so damn easy to use even sheepy wont manage to fsk it up. I'd say anyone whos not got VP use AVG, its quick easy, no hassle and will rob TeaLeaf of an oppourtunity to use his noose and testicle electrodes :lol:

The other thing I noticed is that a lot of the test dates for AVG used virus files that were several months old. As AVG provides updates almost every week I am a little bit dubios about some of the claims. Without seeing the full reports I cannot comment on the validity of the testing and theres the rub... do you think they might be trying to get people to buy subscriptions and hence get the full reports?

Oh and AVG has never caused a crach unlike norton or mcafee

Personally I use norton, I have never had any problems with it and it does the job, thats good enough for me.

those 5 viruses and 3 trojens were me, i used to have McAfee and it didnt detect them, i tryed avg and it found em and booted em for me!

VB use the Wild List http://www.wildlist.org which is definately the defacto standard in listing active real-threat viruses. Both organisations are completely independant. VB offers the complete report to Industry Professionals but it costs Â£100's of pounds a year.

However as VB say on their web site.....

Being free of charge makes AVG a very appealing prospect, and even a fairly good AV prog is better than no AV prog :wink:

Just as a thought it may be advisable to run a backup of your system just in case it does get trashed. You then shouldn't lose anything important and can put it back to a pre Lan state.
