Trying It, Not Convinced Yet

Now, I'm not someone who generally likes the MMORPG genre. I had a stab at Knight Online when -=[dMw]=- got involved with it ages ago, but I didn't seem to progress all that well, and it never really clicked with me.

In fairness, I didn't like the amount of time it occupied. I didn't have much time to give it, and so got frustrated when everyone else progressed quite far and I stagnated around lvl 30.

The main reason I like FPS games is they're easily-accessible for the casual gamer. You can dip in to them, shoot things in the face for an hour or two to relax, and pop it back on the shelf. No weighty manual, no need to keep track of loads of stats. Nice and simple.

Despite all that however, I've decided to give WOW a quick go to see: a) what the fuss is all about, and b) where half of -=[dMw]=- have ended up. It's been downloaded from www.trywarcraft.com, and I currently have a ten day trial account to play with.

It seems an interesting game right enough, but I'm still not convinced it's for me due to the amount of time it will no doubt require should I decide to continue on with it.

If anyone fancies looking me up, giving me a few pointers, and convincing me to give it a fair crack, I've got a Level 8 Dwarf Priest called Cadaveran on the Aszune server. I'm muddling about doing quests around the Dun Morogh area in a solo fashion atm, as noone around here seems to be up for forming low-level parties. Friendly bunch that they are... :)

Nice that you at leat give it a try Cadaver
Whenever you're online, do a "/who Silver Oak Guardians", that will give you a list of all the online SOG memebers, and if you need anything you can probably find a few familiar names you can ask (and Bob = Threbrilith, in case you wondered :flirty: ), so that's one place to look for company!

The problem with getting parties at low leves at this time is quite common I guess. The reasons for that, is that most low levels you see around are alts to people who already have one (or many) lvl 60s, which mean they know the area, know the quest - in general know the drill on how to move fast forward. That means that many will think of it to slow them down if they were to party with somebody that are there fresh and ready to explore a whole new world. Don't take it personal, it's just the way it gets :)

On the other hand, it is not hard at all to level solo. Focus on doing quests, and I think you'll enjoy the various quest lines you cross (which many of 'em you'll see again later in the game), so going solo does not have to be boring.
Also when you get a bit higher in levels (say close to 30 and above), you start running into intances, which there are much easier getting a party for.  Also, if you decide to buy the game, you would most likely join a guild (go SOG :flirty: ), which will give you a whole bunch (with many that have low level alts) of folks that would like to join you in the adventures throughout Azeroth :)

When I first started playing WoW I stopped when I reached lvl 20. I had the same problem, everyone was miles ahead and I didn't enjoy finding random groups.

9 months later I started it again, but this time I concentrated on getting to lvl 60 as fast as I could.

//www.wow-pro.com has some great guides from level 20 which takes you to 60 via questing and the odd bit of grinding.

Once I hit 60 I could finally start running instances (with teamspeak/ventrilo) with my fellow dMw (Argh Crap Leggit, I wasn't with SoG at the time). This is what the game was about and pretty much felt like being on the hook on a Friday night.

I noticed you had some not-too-positive comments about that great game we call WoW in that thread in the Banter forum as well Ron... To be honest, I think that's just your way to "cover" that you actually start getting a bit tempted by it yourself :norty:

If they say that they have a strait jacket for you, trying to claim that it's the latest fashion - DON'T believe them :narnar:

Tsk tsk.  Have faith Ron.  I like to think I'm a reasonably well-balanced individual.  I'm sure a mere game won't be the downfall of me... :narnar:

Besides, as Bob/Threb has pointed out, what I'm mainly seeing is that the few other low-level player characters I come across are alternates for folk who've already levelled their main character to the max.  I'm seeing precious little desire to group with someone still finding their way, as they're all intent on speed-levelling.  I'm not finding it to be the social game that it's been heralded as, but then:

a) I have come to it two years down the line.
b) An expansion pack has also come out recently, giving the well-established folk more new content on which to focus themselves.

In effect, right now I'm playing a single-player game, albeit one with a very wide scope.   I'm up to level 10 though, which has seen me gain some new monster-bashing attributes to fiddle with.

WOW is fun in its own way, I can see the attraction of it, but I wouldn't say I'm finding it terribly exciting.

I'm quite surprised you're not seeing other newbies to be honest. I woulda have thought, given that the expansion has just come out, that everyone who already has a level 60 character will either be levelling them to 70 ASAP, or levelling a Blood Elf or Drenai alt (depending on which side they play). I woulda thought all sub level-15 or so character you'd see around in any of the other starting areas at the mo would be other newbies.

Mal: Define interesting...

Cadaver

I didn't say I'm not seeing any other newbies.  It's just that said newbies are mostly experienced players levelling an alt.

As a result they're generally not interested in partying up, as they know the quests already, and the mobs can mostly be soloed.

I did party up with one guy for around half an hour last night, a lvl 8 hunter.  His main char was a lvl 60 warrior, so naturally he was not wanting for cash and equipment.  However, he soon left when he realised his tactic of having my Priest tank things, whilst he used his gun from afar, wasn't working out that great and we died a couple of times.

Its all hands to get to 70 at the moment ...In a few weeks you will see the new races start the grind..

If ya just wanting to level fast you will get disheartened .. just log on and see what little adventure you end up in... To enjoy the game its far better to team up with people around your level rather than just running behind a lvl 60 picking up trash loot ... saying that if you get to a sticking point let us know I'm sure we can give u a bunk up when needed :help2:
