Hi Folks,

Following the inspirational O/C stories from FB and TL, I decided to order a few more parts for my eventual pc build:

Enermax 550W EG651P-VE FMA Blue
Aerocool DP-101 Deep Impact CPU cooler
Artic Silver 3
2 x Alaska Silver 60cm IDE cables
1 x Alaska Silver Floppy cable

I already have the XP1700+ but now mobo as yet.

I'll try and get the PSU and cables in place before the LAN but I would greatly appreciate help with the HS and compound part of the upgrade as I've never done it before.

I hope it all arrives in time.  8)
Cheers, Bert

Arctic Silver 3 and my box of PC bits will be with me at the LAN, so we can fix things on straight away for you  :D   Just have your credit card at the ready............. not to pay for anything of course, but just to spread the goop

Project Little Upgrade..... COMPLETED !!!!!

I received my new PSU and cooler today and like the idiot I am, couldn't resist getting stuck in about it. After 3 carefully botched attempts at getting what I though was a well seated Heat Sink, I turned the catch round 180 degrees and it sat plush. It at least meant I got a little practice grouting the core and even re-tiled my bathroom with the extra used  :D .

It looked like the OEM had used a whole tube of compound on the old HS, it was everywhere, I had the Isopropyl all over the darn thing to clean it.

Although my temperature guage is probably all wrong, it is 5 degrees below the pre-upgrade temperature and with the compound taking 72 hours to settle it could go down another 2-3 degrees. And all that with a cooler that is around 2900rpm, when my old one was 4200 rpm (noisy brute). So that new AeroCool is the business IMHO.

I took the opportunity to clear the massive ammounts of dust out of the pc case and replace the IDE cables which make the whole rig a lot tidier and manageable. The spare cable length packs nicely into the spare 5 1/4 " bay space and whith only one cable tie I cleared the PSU calbes off the rather large cooler.

I also un-screwed the base of the cooler to turn it 90 degrees so the fan faced the vent in the case. I noticed i have two spaces for more fans which have not been installed in this case.

I will say getting the 60cm IDE cables was the correct choice for an ATX midi-tower case, the slack makes routing the cables much easier and also makes it easier to slot into disused space to tidy up.

So far it's been running at about 39 degrees CPU and 25 degrees overall system temp compared to as high as 49 degrees before. System uptime 1 hour so I think the CPU is happy.

So time to put the covers back on and cable it back up.

Hmm I may have to invest in one of those coolers they seem to make a significant difference to the temp and noise.
