A pretty good pallie tanking gear guide popped up in the blues this morning.

TL.
Quote from: Compactd (From the Blues)Just a small guide on how tanking stats affect paladins, and a small gear list you can farm if you want to be a competant tank.

Unlike Shield Block, Holy Shield does not push Crushing Blows off the table by itself. Additional prevention is required. Their main priority is to get their Defense Skill up to 490. If they have the Anticipation, then this requires 288 Defense Rating. Human Paladins with Holy Shield up, Libram of Repentance equipped, the Anticipation talent maxed out, the Deflection talent maxed out and an additional 288 Defense Rating from gear have the following avoidance:
78,81% + (Defense Rating beyond 288 / 15)% + (Dodge Rating / 18.9)% + (Parry Rating / 31.5)% + (Block Rating / 7.9)% + (Agility Bonus / 25)%

Human Paladins need an additional 21,19% chance to prevent Crushing Blow and Regular Hit. To upgrade prevention by 1%, you need:
- 7.9 Block Rating
- 18.9 Dodge Rating
- 15 Defense Rating (Warrior and Paladin)
- 25 Agility (Paladin)
- 31.5 Parry Rating

To reach 100% prevention of Crushing Blow and Regular hit while remaining immune to Critical Hits, you need:
- 288 Defense Rating + 168 Block Rating
- 288 Defense Rating + 318 additional Defense Rating = 606 Defense Rating
- 288 Defense Rating + 401 Dodge Rating
- 288 Defense Rating + 530 Agility Bonus
- 288 Defense Rating + 668 Parry Rating

Of course, you can use a combination of Block Rating, additional Defense Rating, Dodge Rating, Agility Bonus and Parry Rating, as long as the following formula gives a result of 21.19% or higher:
(Block Rating / 7.9)% + (Defense Rating beyond 288 / 15)% + (Dodge Rating / 18.9)% + (Agility Bonus / 25)% + (Parry Rating / 31.5)%

Dwarven Paladins need 21.35%. Draenei Paladins need 21.31%. Blood Elven Paladins need 21.11%.

If 100% prevention is reached, additional Block chance becomes useless, as it falls of the table. Therefor, once 490 Defense Skill and 100% prevention are reached, only complete avoidance helps. To upgrade complete avoidance by 1%, you need:
- 18.9 Dodge Rating
- 20 Defense Rating (Warrior and Paladin)
- 25 Agility (Paladin)
- 31.5 Parry Rating

One thing I noticed from reading this list is that it is seriously lacking +spell damage and +int :g: . Things a pally needs in addition to good tanking stats for generating a sufficient amount of threat over a reasonable amount of time. When a pally goes OOM it's all over; even though they get mana back from healing, their tanking is still on a timer unfortunately.

On the other hand, even with all this gear; how much damage do you think they will take? They're like a warrior without defensive stance and less tanking abilities.

I know pallies plain rock at AoE tanking. But I seriously doubt that they are viable for more then regular 5 man runs atm. They still need some work imo. Are there any Pallies that can enlighten me? I'm not an expert on pally tanking so I might be wrong.

JanuZ

I have only tanked with a 0 prot talent lvl70 pally in lower instances like Slave Pens and Ramparts. But i have always had other lvl70s with me and i held aggro relativly easily.

From what i have read you only need about 200-250spell dmg when tanking and even though i haven't experienced this yet it is said that the mana regen from healing incoming can be high enough that you never run out of mana and this would definetly be true if you go over to 10 and 25man raids.
Now i don't think pallies completely agree on what tanking weapon should be used, a mage/lock sword with +spell dmg or a more standard warrior tanking weapon but it seems both are decent choices

Main weaknesses of pally tanking is Mana, lower health(1k less base health then warrior) and they take about 5% more damage then warriors i think.

But i think a pally tank can be viable for both heroics and karazhan but i would always prefer druid and warrior. Though i would consider having the pally tank AoE groups if he can be spared from healing.

Trust me, the correct answer is "a more standard warrior tanking weapon" so that I do not lose the roll on the [item]Greatsword of Horrid Dreams[/item] to yet *another* paladin. :boxing:

Been thinking about this recently - should I go for Prot tanking? If so, what sort of armour sets do I need to acquire?
