I installed CS:S last night.. but everytime i start it my screen goes black. and after a while it chrashes. I and oth tried to get it working for a loong time.. i gave up after a few hours..
i think it can be the gfx drivers, but i ain't sure.
got the directX 9c
and the newest gfx driver from nvidia.

my pc:
amd x2 2.4ghz
2gb of ram
xfx 8800gts 640mb

It does suggest a driver problem. Try fiddling with the settings in the nvidia advanced control panel. I was getting loads of corruption on CSS (player models like the gun on front of my face stretching off to infinity and stuff, creating masive opaque "walls" of texture and stuff) and altered the openGL and directx slider setting to "performance" rather than quality. Of course I'm using a very old ATI card but it's worth a go.

Can you play other 3D games okay? Does it get into the menus okay but then crash once you start/join a game? Does single player work okay?

If it's only been happening since you made some change - a driver update especially, then try rolling back to the previous driver, or undoing whatever it was you changed? :)

another thing to try is to open up the dxdiag control panel and run all the tests, see if it thinks something is missing/broken from the directx install. If the other games are working it's likely just some annoying software thing. Re-installing directx and the graphics drivers might help as a brute-force method but try checking the directx control panel first :)

reinstalled gfx drivers(downloaded the newest there was on nvidia site(65mb or so).. and did a dxdiag. compared my directX with othbarty's.. reinstalled steam.. crashed windows xx times.. and so forth..

It could be worth trying to run Driver Cleaner, maybe some old graphics drivers are interfering or something.

there are no old drivers installed. and i tried to navigate arround in nvidia console.. i hate that it has installed it self in norwegian.. tried to navigate as Dr.Sadako recomended.. but didn't get long. nVidia Control Panel -> Display -> Manage Custom Resolutions.. this i could find.. but the rest? nope.. Create or Edit (depending on if you have one for 1600x1200 at 60Hz or not) -> Advanced -> switch the timing standard to "CVT Reduced Blank"...
i got silly bad lcd.. running 1280x1024 or something like that..
all i could do was change the resolution and the stadard mhz60,75,80 or whatnot.. going mad here..
as it is for now i can't play CS:S and HL2

Firstly make sure that your config.cfg file is not set to "read-only".

using the Steam Games window create a shortcut to CSS on your desktop. Right click on the shortcut and use the following info to build a command line to try and force the game into directx and a specific resolution:

Command line options you need include:

-d3d (to start in DirectX mode as opposed to openGL or Software modes)
-w xxxx (to force a particular resolution, ie, -w 1280 gives you 1280x1024)
-soft (can be used instead of -d3d to force the game to start in software mode)

You might have to play about until you find a setting that works. Once it is working then you can  usually start CSS normally from your original icon (not the one you modified) although occasionally you might have to copy the command line entries into the launch properties of your CSS icon in the steam games window (so that every time CSS is launched from the server browser it correctly applies the command line switches))

Once you have it working set your config.cfg to "read-only" again if you originally had it that way.

The full list of commands with explanations can be found at:
