Quote Shooting stars are set to grace the night sky with a spectacular light display this weekend. The annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak during the early hours of Monday, but it will be visible from Saturday night until Tuesday morning.
The celestial show will be most apparent in the north-eastern part of the sky near the Perseus constellation.
If the skies remain clear, it will offer stargazers the best opportunity for a few years to see the Perseids.
The shower this year coincides with a new Moon, providing sky watchers with the dark skies necessary for excellent observing conditions.

I'm going to be out in the fields with me instamatic, if I get any worthwhile streaks I'll post em here.

Edit: the last time I saw them, about 15 years ago, I was walking the dogs accross the fields to the pub, and I lay on my back, watching the most amazing display, for about 45 mins. Needless to say, cameras hadn't been invented  yet, so there's only my word for it.

Ditto, I saw a couple over a few days, probably the leading edge.

I saw one and then decided to disable the sensor light in the garden and layed down to watch for half an hour the next night, only saw one again and thought I'd look it up on t'internet to see if anything was due.

Forgot to though.

Thanks for the post Blunt, I'll be setting myself up to have a look tonight.

Saw them, and "WOW" is all I have to say. Caught site of a heck of a lot last night/this early morning.

So about 4 or 5 five of these, with the long contrails of dust and alike trailing behind them.

But also saw one in - particular that was huge, and shot across the sky with a very bright red and orange type of glow to it. Looked as though it was on fire, (entering the atmosphere and burning up?). I'm not a scientist so I don't really know, but it was indeed amazing.

I think it was an elaborate hoax designed to get Doorman out in his garder at 2am gawping up at the sky. While you lot peered round your net curtains giggling

Meteors are actually small grains entering the atmosphere and burning up, so yes. The expression actually originally covered atmospheric phenomenons. As it was later discovered to be an object entering the atmosphere two other expressions was added. The "geological" term, meteorite, which indicates a larger object that has made it through the atmosphere to Earth. Finally, if they bump around in space on the other hand, and hasn't entered the atmosphere they are called meteroids (or somthing like that, in English) :)
