Wow. I do remember the real estate agents pushing a lot, though.

It's crazy that even though the housing market is trudelling along at a fairly slow pace people still believe the old line..."I've had alot of interest into this one, infact a couple are coming down later to sign for it....but if you sign now..."
I don't tend to buy things that impulsively and I'm sure I could wait 3-4days to choose if I want a house (and once I'd decided I'd still put in an offer atleast 5K less than the asking price, the worst that happens is they say no, and you offer more)

5K ?

The house we just bought is a good example.

I offered them a lot more below the asking price (as a starting point to begin negotiations) and they accepted .

OK admittedly I know they were distressed sellers and had to sell but some people huh?

A lot under? I wonder what the closing price was...

It might depend on how much the house is and what you find reseanable to haggle.

For my appartment I'm paying 156.000 Euros for 68m2 and it's a startersappartment.
Not alot of space but an ideal location and it's going to be newly build.
Can't wait untill it's finished.

Also depends on what part of the country you are in.
Prices are still going up in Scotland (South-West anyway) at the moment.

True.

Prices are just mad - The south East/London/Home Counties is just plain stupid.

However it's all a question of parity - just because house prices are high you've still got to buy a new one if you sell so it's not a though you're better off.

I just worry how our kids are ever going to get on the property ladder.

PS. I edited my original post therefore amended my quoted ones.....

I know what you mean.
My mother allready asked if I couldn't buy her house.
Really can't as housingprices in the NL are also insane.
da_Ricci is building his house in a town near us because in our town houseprices and groundprices are really high.

5k is a lot if the house was on for 60k. :)

Ermmm, 5k? I ment 15k.

Obviously it would depend on the owners, the price and the house itself. If the bedrooms were all being used and there was very little storage space I'd assume they'd be upgrading and want to move in a hurry. So the offer would be less.
But if it's a nice house that just looks too big for the person they might not be so egar to sell. I'll deal with all the nonsense in a few year when I'm less of a student.

'Distressed sellers' are the way to go if you can find them.

Can't afford interest rate hikes (going to be massive) and need to downsize
Divorces
Probate
Realisation of capital required etc are all good prospects.

It's all a game
