8800gts 320 ro 640

i'm considering a 8800gts is it worth the extra £60 for the extra 320 mb of ram?
 
i'm thinking that maybe by the time you will see a benefit the card will be really for the scrap bin anyway.

I went for the 320mb version, I thought exactly the same. By the time games need 640mb that £60 will be a decent wedge of cash towards the replacement. I guess the biggest decider is the resolution though...I run at 1280x1024, if you run higher (especially 1680x1050 or higher) then the extra ram may serve more of a purpose.

I'd agree with that T-Bag said to be honest. I specifically didn't get a TFT monitor any larger than 19" because I wanted to be able to run everything in native res (1280x1024) and didn't want to have to upgrade really frequently because native res was something astronomical (as it would be on a larger monitor). For me, by the time 640MB gfx RAM becomes useful at 1280x1024, i'll be looking to get a next-gen (as in not out yet) card *anyway*, but you may find it makes a difference if you're using a 22" widescreen TFT or whatever.

I assume judging by prices that the GT is slower than the GTS even though the clock speed is higher? I assume this has to do with the difference between a 256bit and 320bit interface...what does this mean to performance? (is it worth saving that little money?)

Edit: Ok the reviews place it between the GTS and the GTX so it's worth going for. I never really bought Nvidia untill recently so their naming system confuses me, the 8600GT is slower than the 8600GTS, but this GT is faster?!.
Only down side seems to be it's single slot (small fan used, so can be noisy), but I doubt it'll be too bad.

They'll most likely be upgrading the current GTS and GTX graphics card so that the GT will yet again be below the GTS.

If you haven't bought one yet don't. Get the 8800gt thats just come out its cheaper and runs faster then the 8800gts. See this article.

And no Lee they won't be upgrading the hardware on the gts and gtx cards according to that article they are being phased out to make way for newer ones using the same gpu architecture as the gt.
