Looks like lcd & plasma tech has been surpassed already, not sure about oled.

Sounds good. It uses similar technology as Rear Projection but doesn't have the disadvantage of being rubbish. Hope this does what it says because then 80" TV's could be as affordable as a 50inch LCD is now. Lasers should provide great colours, and when your tv packs up down the line you'll be able to put on awesome light shows.
When they've been out for a while I might buy a knackered one just to have 3 awesome lasers.

Seriously, who would actually put a 80" screen in their homes or a 50" for that matter. You need to sit 5-10 meters away to actually see the entire screen at once. Also you need some damn good output device to fill an 80", HD and Bluray will not be enough.

Just wait, in time these things always get bigger. A few years ago people generally went for around 22" tv's as their main set and many are already now going for 42". TV's will keep going up in size till you can buy ones the same proportions as cimema screens relative to the distance you sit from them which will be 80"+.
And yes you'll need a damn good input, but there are digital cinema projectors, so there is the technology to do high quality digital, it'll filter down in time. When HD first came out most people didn't have any HD inputs, even now Sky+ HD does very little in the way of normal TV, you have to watch a movie or a modern series to see proper HD but still thousands of people have HDTVs.

Aye. 2 of my workmates have 40" LCDs. I've seen them in their livingrooms (similar size to mine, about 15' square(ish)) and they're just *too* big. I went for a 32", both because it was about half the price and because it's actually a reasonable size for my livingroom.

I've got a 42" LCD in the house and a 4 Meter Projection screen in my outbuilding. The projector is capable of 720p and looks great from 5 meters with a high def source. It also looks good using standard DVD's and is a lot more immersive than watching films on the 42" LCD TV. So to answer your question about who would have one in there homes.....ME

It's an old school (1862) that was converted to a house in the early 70's. The outbuilding was used as the dining room. It's no stately home but it does have large rooms which could easily take a 50-80" TV (if someone wants to buy me one).
