To quote the website:

The trial offers time unlimited real-time protection (free spyware blocking), but does not remove threats detected during on-demand scans.

So he would have to buy it to use it as needed.

Try avg or avast which ARE free:

AVG Free - scroll to bottom of page

Avast

Key thing is to remove the active virus from the memory first. As long as that is active the files you open will be continuously infected. This can also cause the virus to infect the AV program when it is installed - unless the installation of the AV program is designed to protect from this. If your AV program gives you the option under installation to check first, before installing (something like that) then be sure to say yes.

well, I think the best thing you can do if you do infact have 12,000 viruses is to pour petrol over your computer and burn it!

If that is a little too extreme then a format and re-install is probably on the cards here, 12,000 is a lot, and there is no knowing what damage has been done to your system.

Here is what I would do.

1. run an online virus scan (google for it)
2. after cleaning as many of the viruses as you can download some free anti virus software installers and either burn to disk or copy to the usb hdd as mentioned in the next step, then unplug from the internet
3. hook up a usb hdd and backup your important files, don't forget your e-mails if you run a pop3 service
4. unplug usb hdd and keep safe
5. wipe your hdd and re-install the os
6. plug in the usb hdd and install the anti virus software
7. run a full scan on the new install AND the usb hdd to make sure there are none left on the usb hdd
8. assuming all is good you can now hook upto the internet and restore your important files and resume normal computer operation.

The above is rather involved and if you are unsure on any step, please seek a professionals advice. I'm not responsible if you hose your system! You have been warned!

Just a question...How do you know you have 12,000 viruses if your AV has passed away?

btw, I'm with BB here, D'load AVG, AntiVirus, antiMalwear, AntiRootkit

12,000 viruses?  Surely alot are duplicates.
I'm surprised that with that amount you can log into your PC.
Reformat would be safest option.

Seriously mate, re-install. I can't see how you're ever going to clean it all well enough.

What the man said..

I'd burn the data on a CD and then reinstall everything from scratch with a full format.

you could have been done by now.. hope you don't plan on brining that PC to any LAN's any time soon..
