Unlike BF2 your COD4 profile is stored locally. So when you move PC's or restore your OS, you will lose all your hard work. This will also happen if you join a non-ranked (custom) server.

Vista files are located here:

C:\Users\{YourUsername}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore \Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

XP files are located here:

C:\Games\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

Your folder structure may be different.

I run a script in Vista to backup my profile to a network drive. Here it is; you can edit it yourself to deal with your folder structure and preferred backup location (just copy and paste into a text file then rename the text file to something like profbackup.cmd and leave it on your desktop for easy access).

NB that the xcopy command has been deprecated in Vista and is replaced by robocopy (which is much more powerful). Note also that there is no trailing \ at the end of the folder paths; it fails to run if you add them!

echo Press any key to backup CoD4 Profiles to the X: Drive...
echo.
pause > nul
@echo on

robocopy "C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players" "X:\Games\CoD4" /E

@echo off
echo.
echo Copying complete! Press any key to close this window.
echo.
pause > nul

Just to quickly add that you need to view hidden files and folders to view this directory

Bumping this because we now have custom maps on FH and afaik you lose your profile on non-standard maps.

That's strange, my profile wasn't there. My WaW was located in:

C:\Users\{YourUsername}\AppData\Local\Activision\CoDWaW

My CoD 4 was in my steam folder:

N:\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty 4

I copied the Player folder and the servercache.dat file as that's what is in the WaW folder. Are there any other files I need?

Correct, CoD5 is located elsewhere.
I use a script thingie for it which I downloaded to make backup files.
Got it for XP and Vista if someone is interested.

For CoD4 I usually just copy the entire file called; profile.
Survivor of LAN V, VI, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIV, XVI, XVIII, XX, XXIV, XXX, XXXII, XXXIV and XXXVI so far...

Having trouble finding mine - I've found a foler called profiles it has the following files in it - is this the correct ones to save?

mods >a folder
save > a folder
config.cfg
config_mp.cfg
mpdata

DuVeL

For CoD4;
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

In there you should have your gaming name.

Best thing is to copy it somewhere.
You are correct on the files in it.

no peanuts

Why is this backup needed? Is it just pre-emptive?

I did back it up before joining the first time. But I did not have to restore it up until now.

I can join custom maps and play....this launches ModWarfare with a new profile.
And I can join normal maps and it automatically calls my original profile with all guns unlocked.

I reckon there's 2 profiles, one for COD4 regular and one for modwarfare. Havnt checked this tho.

It is always good to back up a profile in case it gets corrupt, using any cod4 mods (such as ED matches, custom maps, etc) can mess it up also, which is why we strongly suggest backing it up before you join the private server.

your profile contains all your classes etc, so if loose it, your back to square one.

I've just put a fresh instal of CoD4 onto my new Hdd.
I have my old C: drive intact renamed to E:
I've tried copying the profile from my old cod4 into the new instal but when I start the game I get an error message that tells me my profile has been reset.
I've tried starting the game from scratch with no profile, then over copying my old profile over the new 1 with the same result.
I'm running out of options now, and it looks like I may have to start ranking again.
Could be fun:norty:
but I'd rather not if I can help it.
Any Ideas?
I noticed Karrde had the same issue last night.

This might help Blunt:

Says you have to either 1) only put the profile files into the directory once you have the game at the same patch you were at when you backed them up or 2) Create a dMw|Blunt profile and once you have started a game then just copy the backup into their directories.
