Colour Picker - FREE TO ALL IN THE dMw community

Ever wanted to 'grab' a colour from the screen because you think it's a cool colour? Or perhaps like with the 'dMw DONATING' button competition you wanted to know what the correct background colour was?

Well, a while ago when my IT company was going full speed, I had my programmer make a little program which we called 'Colour Picker'.

Colour Picker is a useful little tool for grabbing exact colours from your currently displayed desktop.  You can grab colours to us in your design application, website or publication - up to you how you use it.

You can copy Hex values, Colour Values (for programming) or RGB values.

You can see a screenshot of what the application looks like here.

How to install

The program should work in both XP and Vista.

You need to manually install the program:

1. Copy/extract the files in the RAR file to something like C:\Program Files\Colour Picker\

2. Manually register the .dll files contained in the package by going to the run box (Start>>Run) and type regsvr32. You can simply type regsvr32 and drag the file into the run box.  Press enter and the dll should register ok.  Don't worry if one of them doesn't.

3. Create yourself a shortcut  to the .EXE file somewhere and run it!

Download the RAR file here

IMPORTANT!

All I ask is you post a reply back here to let me know if you have downloaded it and are using it.  Maybe, just maybe if there is positive feedback we might be able to develop the program or even disperse it further afield?

Thanks and enjoy! :D

What an excellent little tool! :thumbsup2: (as the actress said to the bishop :norty: ) In order to get the colour for this forum I had to take a screenie, open it in PS etc. etc. What a pita!
Oh, only two of the .dlls seem to be registered, is that OK?

That could be useful, I don't have a use for it at the moment, i'm sure other people will find it useful though. Would be good I guess if there was a more straightforward way to install it?

I've created two batch files (one for XP and one for Vista) that will register the DLLs for you if you put the program in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Colour Picker\" (Vista) or "C:\Program Files\Colour Picker\" (XP)

You can get them here :)

Jabbs, feel free to include them in the RAR.

PS the third DLL (AMJHL.dll) is the one that fails to register.

Thanks all, I will add the batch file to the RAR file. EDIT: Added (Thanks BB, should have done that myself really)
Yes the AMJHL.DLL is the one that fails as it is the C++ DLL and not the Visual Basic DLL.

I've removed the offending line from the batch files :)

That batch file didn't work for me. Yes I put the files in a folder C:\Program files\Colour Picker\ ran the batch file and she say no! Did them by hand and she say yes!

Me thinks Doorman has Windows Vista :narnar:

Tell me if I'm wrong :norty:

BB does the batch file work when run from the Program Files folder?

Methinks Doorman wouldn't touch Vista with a barge pole. Ipso facto, you are wrong. :flirty: And no, I didn't use the wrong batch file. :narnar: :narnar: :narnar:

Without wishing to urinate on anyone's deep-fried potato segments, this doohickey http://iconico.com/download.aspx?app=ColorPic&type=free is quite spiffy in the colour picking department.

I copied the batch file to my desktop and ran it from there. Worked fine for me.

I have to say that Jabbs' app does it in a much less fussy fashion. Maybe if you were making a collection of colours ColorPic would just edge it. But for grabbing the one off colour, no. Chips dry, no worries. :D
