Ours is up and running .
It took about 2 hours to dismanlte and put back together.
All sound issues are now resolved and its running tickerty boo style.

Lo fellas
Which ram would be best for our motherdoard then.

I have amd1900+ on the asus MB
with a gf 4200ti graphics card.

If you are going to stick with the default FSB then PC2100 is as fast as it will go.  OTOH if you are going to overclock it then you'll need faster.  In any case, PC2700 is cheaper than PC2100 in most places nowadays.  If it is not for overclocking then I'd get any big name generic PC2700 RAM (eg Samsung etc).  If it is for overclocking then you need to get a premium brand - I would suggest Corsair or OCZ from my own experience, both of which I have been real happy with.  Speed wise PC3200 would cope with a 200MHz FSB.  

If you want to run dual channel mode for the RAM then get a matched pair of RAM sticks tested for that purpose.

That's just the mobo I was thinking of buying next week. New PC time!!  :D
I was gonna put an XP2500 Barton CPU in it, two 512Mb PC3200 ram sticks, a 120Gb Maxtor SATA disk and a 258Mb V5600 card in it. Looking forward to being able to join in the UT deathball games at the LAN.  :P
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

The 2500 Barton defaults to PC2700, but as that cpu overclocks real nice you can up the FSB to 200MHz and use PC3200.  OTOH, you may want to think about increasing the RAM to PC3500 to give yourself some headroom on the overclock?

Well the new PC bits have been ordered. UT 2003 Death ball here I come  :D
Never done this over-clocking thing before. Is it easy and is it worth doing? Will make me play better?  :dribble:

For information about this PC stuff!! Don't get your hopes up, or anything else for that matter.
Getting the Asus A7n8X Deluxe, XP2500, 2 x 512Mb PC3200 RAM, 120Gb Maxtor SATA disk, LG CD-RW.DVD-R and Windows XP. Didn't bother with a Floppy, don't think I'll need it.

Now should I partition the hard disk or what? If so what do people recommend? Three partitions, one for system, one for swap file and one for pron? (Oh and maybe CS too.)  ;)

Well I've put it all together and it worked first time  :rolleyes:
One question though, should the BIOS have recognised the CPU speed automatically? It looks like it's an XP1100 not the 2500 I bought!!  :unsure:
Also should I have to set anything to get the RAM speed to 400? I've just left it at all the defaults. :blink:

Still got to install HL and CS and a virus checker, which I'll do tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be playing on it on Saturday night  :D

Dunno specifically about your mobo, but my P.o.S. motherboard from new (and any time you update/wipe the BIOS) defaults to "safe" settings - i.e. 100Mhz bus speeds, which drops my XP2000 somewhat. A quick tweak up to correct (133Mhz in my case) bus speeds, and all is well with the world.

The default 166MHz FSB (333MHz memory) fairly often causes a mis-reading of the CPU.  Flash to the latest BIOS to see if ASUS have fixed it.

With your set up you should be able to change the FSB to 200MHz (that will give you the 400MHz RAM speed you wanted).  This will make your chip run a damn sight faster than normal - read the thread 'The King is Dead, Long Live the King' for a link to an article about overclocking a Barton 2500.

Keep your memory divider at 1:1 to ensure the memory runs in sycnchronous mode.  Make sure the sticks are in the appropriate slots to allow dual channel mode to operate.

I've set the frequency to 166, I did set it to 200 and it started running at XP3200  :D  :D . But as I've only got the standard cooler I changed it back down.
Still need to check the memory settings but it seems to be running OK.
I've just installed HL and all the patches and a few maps but I can't remember the password for the hook  :angry:  :unsure: .

So we know what your next purchase will be then eh?  :whistle:   Put a nice cooler on it and it will go nicely - just make sure you are checking the temps as you go along.....somehting like Motherboard Monitor is good, but Asus also do their AsusProbe which comes on the CD with the motherboard.
