I suspect there is something in the scoring system that takes the average team distance when a team member dies and not the individual locations.
So if one person got all the way to the end and died in the saferoom when the rest of his team were 33% of the way, the average distance would be 50%, if his team then made it the rest of the way, rather than a score of 100% and a 3x multiplier it would be a 88%.
(I'm not sure this is right, it's only a guess - and not too important after we got owned on the second run.)
